Love It on IE - Sucks On Firefox

I have a squeeze page that I have done some editting to and it looks perfect on Internet Explorer but then I go to Firefox and it absolutely sucks.

Is there a script or somethng that I can place in the code so that one page will load to IE and a completely different editted page will load to Firefox?

Granted I will have to build a seperate page for Firefox but I think I can probably handle that.

Or am I just completely naive and totally missing something?

I am using Frontpage to edit, not that that makes any difference.

I'm getting a bit frustrated here!

Please help!

Thanks,

Mike Tansey

As tempting as it sounds, if you add script to redirect the page based on the browser, you will potentially have to have versions for all the different browsers (and maintain the script so that it knows what to check for). It may feel like more work now, but I would recommend simplifying your HTML so that it looks good in both browsers. Try to use CSS wherever possible as that is intended to solve these issues.

    Hi Mike

Youve just opened up a whole can of worms on here right now!

I use frontpage and dont even have firefox installed as i simply dont like it. Ive had 2 nasty emails from designers telling me that it doesnt display as good as what it should with firefox and then surprise surprise he will do it for me for a couple of thousand dollars - what a cheek

My point though is unless the majority of your clients are going to be visiting you with firefox i would leave it alone and keep it as it is. I have heard though that using frontpage doesnt interact as well with firefox so maybe do it with another program if your desperate for it to be perfect.

Say for example my twitter ebook after more thqan 5,000 downloads since last month only 4 people have come back to me with firefox issues

2 said the header didnt appear properly with it did in IE
2 said there was no optin form that appeared but it did in IE

either use a different program or leave it as it as the majority still use IE and those that dont probably do there designing in it but still view their webpages in IE.

Its just like with anything you do there will always be someone that is not satisfied and gives you grief anyway.

The other point to make is that if you have a blog pics can now appear very different in Firefox!

I know im probably crazy but i would love to shoot the person that developed firefox why not all go back to IE and make our life simplier as in this biz many of us have very little design experience and dont need the hassle!

Hi, I think Frontpage is actually the problem. Frontpage has a bunch of extra codes/etc that interfere with the page output - it does not produce "clean" html. Just thank Microsoft for that.

Long term, my advice is get Dreamweaver - the learning curve is not too bad (I made the swicth from FP to DW about 3 years ago and it has made a world of difference.)

Short term, you may have to live with crappy display in certain browers - by the way - you should check Netscape and also the mac browser.

Have to disagree with you there Sam - Firefox is a major contender in the main web browsers around, pretty much second to Internet Explorer. Depending on the web site in question, Firefox usage can account for 3, even 4 out of 10 visitors - which is a sufficient number to ensure your web site works and looks correct in it.

Agree with your frustrations on designers with hidden agendas - and certainly if the site functions and does what it needs to, it's not the end of the world. But it is important to have a site design that looks like it works, and doesn't look like it has errors - it'll dent people's confidence in trusting what you say and what you sell.

I enjoyed that. I get the urge to buy a gun once in awhile also.

But for my simple sig site, most of the traffic comes from social bookmarking sites, and one month FF visitors outnumbered IE by 3 to 1. They are always at least double. It is probably not a good browser to ignore.

I was pretty casual about not even checking if it looked ok in ie 1.1 or whatever, until someone I knew couldn't see half the site with an old ie. So from then on I've tried to get them to look good in as many browsers as possible.

It always stays a hessle no matter what you do. In my upinion a site should display well in every screen resolution and browser. I have alot of probs with IE not displaying my site as i like it.
But if i get a marketing-pissed off mail, i would simply put it in my spam folder right away!
It is not sutch a big deal to get the site where you want it yourself and everytime you do it, actually YOU are earning money by getting the site exacly how you wanted it, not having to buy a over the top designer idea, and you are saving time the next time you are figuring out how to do it. It WILL get easyer.

Holy crap, that is the worst advice I've ever heard. Don't EVER listen to someone who uses Frontpage as their main "web development" tool.

Firefox represents about 30% of the internet today, and if it doesn't display correctly in Firefox, you can bet it won't display correctly in EVERY other standards compliant browser, which means everything EXCEPT for IE. Standards compliant browsers are approximately 45% of global usage.

So basically that advice told you to cut out 45% of your potential customer base.

Here are the global usage stats: W3Counter - Global Web Stats

    ***EDIT***
Did I mention that IE8 is going to be Standard's Compliant? That means if it is messed up in Firefox now, chances are it is going to be messed up in the next Explorer, too.

I suppose it really depends on your customer base i have a lot of newbies and did a poll recently and my visitors only accounted for 1/2 a percent on FF and yes im sure ill use dreamweaver soon and make my site better to all but right now i have some other things to sort out first!

    Hi lloyd

I get your point about social clients but i find mine on twitter seem to be ff customers that are web designers and see the need for both more than someone like me.

I remember when FF came popular a few years ago but i still think that to save everyone a lot of time it would be so nice to return to the era where we just have the one

    Hi Wayfarer

I must have given you the wrong impression even though 30% now use it or whatever it is doesnt mean that they are my customers as the internet is a very big place and if i did i would be a billionaire - i wish!

I dont use frontpage for everything as it just doesnt always do the trick but for one page webpages it suits my needs perfectly.

There are many different products to chose from its a case of us all having a personal favourite!

    @dmspublishing,
I know that targeting a group is the wise thing to do, but you must see my point about future-proofing your websites. Even a sizable portion of your low-tech consumers are going to be upgrading to IE8 in the very near future. In addition to this, IE8 is actually going to be an optional (though default) installation in the new Windows 7. When a website renders correctly in Firefox, 99% of the time it will render exactly the same way in all of the standards-compliant browsers (Chrome, Safari, Opera).

So even if you in particular aren't cutting yourself out of 45% of your customer base, you're cutting yourself out of a significant portion, and your business model is going to degrade in the future as browsers become more standardized. Even Microsoft has admitted that their browser lags behind the others technologically, which is why they have become an active member of the Standards movement.

IE8 is still going to be behind the others, but its a huge leap forward already. In retrospect, IE7 was also a huge leap forward in comparison to IE6, so at least there is progress being made.

To anyone that doesn't know, Frontpage has been officially discontinued by Microsoft, and you won't be able to get support for this product if you decide to use it.

did a poll recently and my visitors only accounted for 1/2 a percent on FF
A poll? So you did a poll of those which stayed on your website?? That does not account for those that just went away. Anyone viewing a website that does not render correctly is not going to stick around to fill out a poll. I'd be more interested in seeing the Analytics data, which can collect that information automatically.

As I was reading all the replies. It comes in my mind that all internet providers are good to use. There are only instances that IE will work on some countries or internet connection just like DSL and Firefox works also in other country just like mine I use firefox and it is very helpful to me. And also maybe, there's just a problem in your internet connection because if you do have good internent connection provider all those two will be a great use for you.
