only know with Joomla and not with wordpress but all you need is a component that is compatible for video uploads and imbedding videos. Through doing this you can insure that the free videos are just added from your own youtube channel insuring that your badwidth is kept low while also you generate money from youtube views, while the payed membership section is allocated to upload video on a mombership section of the website.

You can do better than the Lynda model. This is what I do and it works great. Plus you will make copious amounts of money, if that's your thing. (It's mine)

    1. Grab any WP premium theme that suits your fancy. (Not to fancy)
    2. Get it up and running on a decent server so the site is fast. (Really fast)
    3. Invest in a good sales page writer. (Lots of writers on this forum)
    4. Have the writer, write 7 autoresponders for you.
    5. Collect optin email addresses using aWeber.
    6. Offer your course free and drip the written portion of your course daily.
    7. Upsell video instruction of your course for a fee.
    8. Host and collect your money here: Video Subscription Service, Sell Your Video Online, Monetize Video - Viddler

Pick one niche. Perfect one niche first. Look at each niche as it's own business. It's own site. It's own Viddler account. Targeting one niche works. Forget selling on the site. All you want is their email address, then use autoresponders. Give them your best written instructions free. Upsell the videos. They'll come to you.

Get everything ready before you subscribe to Viddler. That's your last step. If you're offering something that will help someone, you'll make a killing with this simple model.

I really like that business model. You're giving them something of value for free up front, which instills trust, which will no doubt make a massive difference when it comes time to sell to them. Good stuff!

I like this idea a lot!... also, not sure if you have seen this WP plugin... WordPress › Paid Memberships Pro « WordPress Plugins... but I'm sure there's more setup that you need to learn... never tried it but it looks promising

If your videos are on YouTube, there is no way to prevent others from being able to download them (sure you could set the access to "private", but then you are limited to just 50 viewers, so that wouldn't work for your purposes -- besides, any one of those viewers could still download them and then share them with anyone).

But relying on YouTube to serve videos to your paying customers would be a VERY bad idea anyways. What would happen if you have a bunch of YouTube videos uploaded to your account, and then one day YouTube decides to delete some or all of your videos, or shut down your account altogether? (this happens ALL THE TIME, and often for no apparent reason). Then you are screwed!

For hosting videos for this purpose, I would highly recommend that you use a CDN (like Amazon S3). It's cheap, scalable, extremely reliable, and was made exactly for this purpose. Alternately, you could host the videos on your own web server IF you don't require much video bandwidth (ie when you're starting out and you only have a handful of customers). But for any significant volume... a CDN is the way to go.

Another reason not to host the videos on your own server is that the video playback performance is not likely going to be as good as it is on a CDN, because most "web host" servers are not optimally configured to stream videos (but CDN's are).

True, and good post. I'd recommend doing both. Put the free videos on Youtube for SEO and traffic purposes. Get them to your site's squeeze page and onto your list(s). At the same time, upload both the free and paid videos to the CDN, and use the free videos off the CDN as your website source

I am also looking for some tools to sell video tutorials, but I would like to be able to prevent the downloading of the videos. Amazon S3 videos can easily be downloaded using the URL in the code.

Does anyone know how to prevent the downloading of MP4 videos?

If someone wants to download your video, there is really no way to prevent it. There are plenty of browser plugins out there that make it a trivial matter to download most video files. Even if the actual video file URL is "cloaked", you can almost always find the real URL by using Firebug or similar program.

But even on the rare occasion that someone is unable to find your actual video file link, they can still use a screen recorder like Camtasia to record the video to their hard drive as it's playing.

That said, the majority of your paying customers will be honest, so I've found that it's best to focus your time and energy on them, and on growing your business, rather than worry about the small percentage who are out to rip you off.
