I currently i and my team are working to transfer a big established site in drupal to wordpress.
As a developer in wordpress i would say process is easier now after wp has CUSTOM POST FORMATS, and TAXONOMIES... this help you code wordpress the way your current Drupal maybe.

Most of the time users may want to go automatic path, but in our case client wanted
to change many thing and discard some old content in the process... so here is how we went...

1. We coded custom theme and custom post formats as per the drupal site
2. Then we transferred content manually post by post to wordpress (Lucky to have fast
guns in office, who are lazy in programming but in copy paste they are fast tigers

3. Custom templates for custom post formats to make them display the way client want...

You may feel lot of work in process of following above noted manual path, but for me,
it is really satisfying experience to mould and take wordpress to new heights...
