Forum Add On for WordPress

Hi there

I need to add on a forum to a Wordpress site.

I just have a couple of questions:-

1. I was going to add it on to a sub domain ie forum.example.com Is this a good idea to keep it from main site?

2. Can anyone recommend the best forum plugin to add on, or is it better to get a separate theme?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Darren

I currently have two WP sites with forums on them. Both of these sites are hosted on Hostgator and one of them is using phpBB which is ready to run from Hostgator and it is set up like you are thinking in it's own separate sub folder. I haven't had any issues running it, It doesn't really pick up any of the theme aspects. I had to provide the header image and do other tweaking It could still use more work....

The other site is using Mingle forums which seems to work pretty good
    The Preppers Forum
so far It picks up the theme components . I'm still working with both of them so I'll see what needs doing the further I go with them. I may end up changing the phpBB forum over to Mingle . I'll just have to see how it works out.

You will have a hard time making it look the same as the main website. You should definitely use a subdomain like forums.example.com instead of just a folder

You can create a sub domain like forum.example.com or example.com/forum & then you can use PHP forum script (software). Thanks!

    a) themes will NOT make/add any forum to a WP site
    b) there are several forum plugins/scripts that integrate well with WP
    c) a subdomain is, probably, a good idea, if you want to keep it "separate" from the main site (conf. SEs consider subdomains as separate sites)

Many users praise SimpleMachine and WP's own BBPress... but you should do your own homework > WordPress › Search for forum « WordPress Plugins based on your own needs!
