Permalinks - Is /%postname%/ no longer accepted for custom structure?

Just installed Wordpress on my Hostgator domain.

I have been trying to change permalinks to the custom structure of

/%postname%/

which is how I always did it.

But now it will not save these changes and reverts back to the Post Name option.

Is it recommended to use the Post Name option now and not custom structure?
#accepted #custom #longer #or %postname% or #permalinks #structure

In the latest WP it's already set for you -- just select the option.

Do you mean select the 'Post Name' option and not custom structure?

Here's the deal, if you cannot put %postname% as a custom permalink then it's your database that's conflicting with something.

I encountered this problem with the latest wordpress and the only way to fix this was to start from scratch, everything from the database to uploading wordpress/theme only then it worked for me.

      Hope that helps.

Come on, guys... look around on that Permalinks setting page.

POSTNAME is one of the pre-defined/pre-set options since version 3.3, you do NOT need to add it manually!
Why is so difficult to understand this?

Yes I agree - it looks like Post Name is the replacement for custome structure in the new versions of Wordpress.

      Wrong!
It is NOT a replacement for that. It is/was ONE of the possible custom structures that now has been incorporated into the pre-set options.
You still have the "custom structure" option... you just need to know what are the tag options to be used there.

Unfortunately for you, "this guy" is very much against digging up old threads and likes to delete those posts

Yes it's Hostgator so it should support it, but I think the Post Name option should take care of the issue I had

The tag option previously used is given in the default. Unfortuantly it no longer accepts this.
What is the difference between using post name and custome structure - looks the same to me.

so many posts for nothing....why is so hard to look at the settings page (like Istvan also said) to see that now you have the postname already pre-defined and there is no difference between what was before with the custom structure and what it is now. If you need any other permalink structure than what you see already pre-defined then you can still use the custom structure

The problem is, most people on this forum had (and still has) the completely wrong idea that "custom permalink structure" means ONLY %postname%. They have never ever learned about all other custom options... and even when given a link to the manual, they don't bother to read it.

Well, here is spelled out one more time for troy23 and everybody else: custom structure means any combination of the existing permalink structure tags, not only %postname%!

Again, custom is not equal with postname. %postname% was one possible custom structure prior version 3.3. Too bad people knew only about one custom structure... although there were many!

And, finally, for those that are slow in getting it: if you don't want custom structure, you just want to have a permalink based your post's title - forget the custom (because you don't know what it means) and just use the Postname!
