I'm hoping this is a simple question to answer.

Thinking of creating a membership site using WP and want to be able control where visitors enter the content from. I'd like to use plain HTML pages for intro and sign-up pages as well as the portal to the 'protected' area with a login page and the wordpress site would be the membership/protected info. My question or I should say two questions are :

1. Can I set .htaccess in wordpress to only allow visitors that come through the login page to access the site?

2. If I leave wordpress public (meaning it can be found by search engine) will I still get the SERP results if surfers are redirected to the sign-up/login page rather than the content ?

    Hi,

    1. To answer your first question, yes you can set the .htacess in wordpress to allow members that have logged in to access the protected content and redirect those who haven't to the login/signup page.
    Advanced .htaccess tutorial

    2. If you have password-protected and setup a redirection of your members content to the login page, it will not show up in SERPs. If you decide to use a robots.txt file, only some of search engines will obey the command.

Since you are using wordpress, i suggest you use s2members plugin to manage your membership site. They offer a free and a paid version.
