Home Page Not showing for Main Keyphrse

Hey everyone, I've been having a problem for at least a month now. I am trying to rank for how to make soy candles on my home page. Well, I've been doing link building and I think I have all my seo stuff in place. I'm pretty sure I know a bit about seo as I've been doing it with all my sites for quite some time. Now for some reason, all of my other pages on my site are ranking somewhere, whether on page 14 or page 40 and anywhere in between, except my homepage, which is nowhere to be found!

It is indexed because it shows up on the first page of Google for Homemade Soy Candles, but that is not my target phrase! Now, I found a few days ago that my next pages, like learnhowtomakesoycandles.com/page/2 and also /page/3 were ranking for my target phrase, so I thought maybe Google was seeing duplicate title tags and penalizing my home page and so I nofollow/noindexed those extra pages and disallowed them in Webmaster tools.

This is so frustrating and I feel like there must be something I'm not seeing that needs to be changed. It just doesn't make sense that ALL of my other pages would be ranking for that phrase(even though that's not their target phrase), but not my home page.

I never used to have a problem ranking pages when it was just my html site(I made a wordpress site a few months ago and redirected my homemade candle creations site to the learnhowtomakesoycandles wordpress site). I do know that after the google updates recently, I dropped out of the top for Homemade Candles (which was not my keyphrase, but it did get me lots of traffic for awhile!).

I am, however, indexed in Bing and Yahoo for how to make soy candles

So then I got the bright idea (not sure how bright it was yet) to stop the 301 redirect of homemade-candle-creations.com and just keep it as a separate site since there is not duplicate content, and just put a link on that site pointing to my learnhowtomakesoycandles.com site, which is probably what I should have done in the first place.

Anyway, I'm wondering with all the changes I've been making, maybe I royally messed something up with Google! Any ideas???

I guess that keyword is more competitive. I've found that whenever you have "how to" in a keyword, it puts it on another level as far as competition. When you're struggling with a certain keyword ranking, it might help to analyze the competition and see what kind of links and on page optimization they have.

Too be honest, your site is a little rough. I wanted to click out of it so fast it's not even funny. I think it's something about the color scheme and the alignment of a lot of the text. You need to leave more room in margins.

I definitely dont think its a good idea to no follow anything on your website whatsoever. I suggest just keep trying to rank for that keyword and see what happens. Its not easy to rank for competitive keywords, try doing a no follow on things that actually make sense-like linking out. You link out quite a few times but dont have a no follow on those links-fix that first.

Side note, 301 redirects make websites more powerful if you have backlinks on the prior site.
