Hi, i'm just in the process of setting up my first and have launced it online through the 1&1 Website Builder. The only problem is even for a beginner like me i feel like i'm missing obvious things to insert i.e. banners, RSS Feeds?? etc. The problem is i think the Website builder might be a bit basic or i'm just being dumb. I cn't even figure out the simple things like making the page wider or even how to work the subnavigation level (2 max on 1&1)...Any critique?

  • Seany,

You have a pretty good start here. I have a few suggestions.

I would have someone proof read the site. I noticed a few misspellings and grammatical errors on the home page. I would also try breaking up your content a little (make it less wide) so its easier to read. People get anxiety if they are confronted with a lot of text on a web page. Maybe align your video to the right and text to the left or vis versa.

Consolidate your menu items all into one navigation menu. You could make drop down menus if necessary but having the two rows is unnecessary.

Also the text at the top of your banner is barely legible. I would make that larger and a different color so it is easier to read.

Check out this book, it has a lot of great tips for web design and usability and it’s a quick read,

Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, 2nd Edition: Steve Krug: 9780321344755: Amazon.com: Books
    Hope those suggestions help you,

    Shawn
  • What website builder are you using?

    • Hi I'm using Click & Build on the 1&1 CPanel
  • You should start by creating a new header.
  • I'm getting a 404 error when visiting the site.

  • the links not working mate!

  • Yes, I agree with zxboss, that header needs to blend in and for me the most important thing would be to have an opt in form. Build that list, otherwise you will not be capturing your visitors. Also I couldn't find your Privacy/Disclaimer pages.
  • I really like the looks of you WP template (Online Marketer WP Theme).

Definitely, get rid of the Blog Roll links. You don't want to have any "free leaks" off your site or you could lose visitors.

    • I too really like the look and I love the blue color. Looking good!!
  • no quality content in home page.... better you insert 400 - 600 words good article with images... that help you alot.

    • Hi guys, thanks for the feedback, still building the site and adding the content. Had to change from Linux to Windows hence the slight 404 delay for a day or 2. Probably wise that i shouldn't have published until comlete but just wanted to try it out. The way i'm looking at it as that i doubt i'm getting much traffic just now so shouldn't really be too harmful, i hope..
  • If this is your first website its looking pretty good but you should add more contents and optimize the images so that it will load faster

    • Yeah thanks, the issue with content is coming along, but i keep getting sidetracked trying to learn the various apects of web design. How do you mean "Optimise the images"? and another question but

      1) What are Meta Tags and do i do anything to use them or is the info built in?
