%#&* you Wordpress

I'm both laughing and crying. I've spent the last 6 hours being butt raped by wordpress and I still can't make it do anything I want it to.

I've been building web sites for over ten years using code.

Why is this so bloody hard and who created this thing from hell called Wordpress?

Am I really gaining any benefits with regard to the SEO optimization tools in Wordpress?

  • What exactly are you trying to do?
I think Wordpress is about as good as any other script. It is well developed, but to get "under the hood" takes a little time to learn how things work.
  • I'm no doctor but I'd say you're a bit stressed?

WordPress is actually a pretty decent content management platform, especially from the end-users viewpoint. It makes posting and updating web content very easy - I usually go from registering a domain name to being "on the air" with a rudimentary site in 15-30 minutes thanks to WordPress and the availability of so many open source themes.

If you're a coder trying to develop a WordPress plugin (or modify an existing one) then you may be subject to minor bouts of frustration, mostly due to lack of documentation in certain areas. Is this what's got you upset about WordPress?

If you're only using WordPress for SEO then you may just want to go back to what you're familiar with and make sure to use proper SEO techniques where they're applicable. But WordPress can offer so many other advantages in terms of management and expansion with so many available plugins and themes.

What is it about WP that frustrates you the most?

    • The widgets are driving me insane...and yeah the documentation thing. I have a partner who is not a programmer that wants to start helping with that load and I want/need him to do that. Wordpress also seemed like a good choice with all the auto SEO packages out there. One less thing for me to have to do.

My biggest gripe is half the templates I find are too frickin big. Great looking stuff, but not many people in my target audience go over 800X.

I remove stuff from the right hand column in magically some other junk shows up there. It shows no widgets in the control panel, yet magically something is there. I go to the code and try to weed out the culprit, apply another change to widgets and damnit, magically the junk I just removed is back.

      ARGHHHHHHHHH!

Maybe I'm just using crap templates?

Thanks for your help and yes I'm wee stressed.

  • Hold on...

You've been coding for 10 years and you can't make Word press do what you want? Why are you blaming Word Press?

You could create your own system very quickly with plugin ability like WP as well (it shouldn't take long).

    • Word Press is possessed. I've used dozens of CMS and tried wordpress ages ago and had the same experience. I thought I'd try it again. It hates me.
  • Have you thought about using another CMS?

    • It is my every other thought, but my logic is, "that many people can't be wrong."

      Can they?

  • Oh well, I can tell you I felt just the same at one time. It's now become a 5 minute job, with very little in the way of frustration. I will admit to some though when the newer version came out.

Its a great CMS - but you really need to be specific - oh I can see you're hung up on the template. I've had a little bit of trouble there. But the ones offered to you by wordpress themselves seem to work fine for me.

Here's a wordpress tutorial, but it may be a bit basic.

    Hope that helps.
