Google Webmaster Tools Question

I am working with a client that in Webmaster Tools under HTML improvement it says he has duplicate meta descriptions for like a hundred pages. 92 of them are from old blog posts.

Then under Title Tags, he has 66 duplicate title tags.

The duplicate title tags end in .html then the other ends in .php.

The questions I have are:

1) How hard would it be to clean this up and how would I go about doing it?
2) How much do you think this is effecting his SEO?

The customer mentions that he had a sudden decrease in impressions back in September, and the decrease corresponds with a decrease in hits of course. His impressions began to be for more non relevant kw.

No one really knows how it is affecting the ranking position as there are too many other variables and those who really know are paid very well (by Google) not to talk.

As far as getting rid of the duplicates it depends on the cause. Most likely one or two plugins and/or the theme are duplicating this. So try deactivating all seo and meta info type plugins one by one.If you still have one copy the theme has a line in it that can be taken out (or it can come out of one of the plugins.

Thank You. The customer uses Rapidweaver for his site. I'm not familiar with that platform or the process to delete those duplicate links. Anybody familiar with RapidWeaver?

If/when I do move him over to WP (whcih he wants), will he lose rankings or would the links be able to stay the same and keep the rankings?

You should be able to move him without any large or permanent drop in rankings. I would be sure that any old page that has good ranking has the url forwarded to a new version of itself in the Wordpress installation. Depending on how the url structure is , and how many pages, and if you install the wordpress version in a different folder you may be able to use a 'wildcard forward' and send every page to its new counterpart with one stroke.

Stupid question, but how exactly would I go about this? Is this something that would be done in Rapid Weaver? If they don't upgrade their site for quite some time, and stay with Rapid Weaver, how can I fix the issue?

Make the removal of duplicate tag won't cause you drop in SEO, however, the duplicate tag and title can cause you to be penalized under the new google panda algorithm.
