I will be straight forward with you and tell you I am new at making sites for actual clients. The client I have is unique in that they build tiny homes.

View what I have so far here.... American Tiny House | Small In Size – Big In Quality

I am stuck with the flow of the site. The more I work on it the more it seems like it would be confusing for the end user.

The main purpose of the site is to sell actual tiny homes, tiny home plans, and DeWalt tools.

Should be a pretty straight-forward site. I have just hit a wall with design ideas.

Can any of you give me any pointers?

Thank you.

  • Ryan,

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes you can stare at something for so long that it becomes hard to make sense of it any more.

My first impression is that you have a very good layout in terms of services the company offers. I have a couple of suggestions.

First is the main navigation of the site. You may want to make it stand out a little more. For instance adding a darker background color. It sort of gets lost in the white with all the other scenery and slider images. Not a huge deal though.

I think a major thing (that isn’t really design related) is the presence of the tools products. The construction service doesn’t really mesh well with tools. I know the two are related however I think you should have a talk with your client about perhaps separating the two (tiny houses and tools). Perhaps I’m wrong but it just doesn’t seem like someone looking to buy an inexpensive house would also be looking to buy tools from a website.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

Thank you for your reply. We were actually just talking about making the background more of a tan color.

That was my thinking too. (about the tools)

Their goal with that is to sell the tools to those who want to build their own tiny house.

In my opinion, first you should be clear with what your main product is. I see that you try to sell two product in your website: the tiny house and the DeWalt tools.

First time I open your website, the first thing I ask is, "What is tiny house means? Is it a house so tiny for my kids to play with? Or something tinier so I can use it as key chain?"

I'm not an American. I don't know if in America people already aware about tiny houses. But I think you should explain the benefit of your main product in a sentence that a 6yo kid can understand. Then write that in your tagline section under the slider.

    For example:

An easy to clean, affordable and homy house, a perfect choice for yourself and your smal family.

I'm designing new WordPress theme that maybe suit your need, but you have to wait a month or so

Oh and the slider on your homepage is blocking your website visitor from your content. Never use acordion slider. Use nivo, bootstrap carousel, flexslider or something else.

    Cheers

I see what you mean about the main page. I will be focusing it more on the actual tiny homes. "Tiny homes" are becoming quite a thing here in the states. And going by the keywords we will be targeting there is no doubt site visitors will know what a tiny house is.

I will also add more content to the front page.

Can you explain what you mean in regards to the accordion slider blocking content?

Accordion slider is your main slider that shows the full slider content only when user hover on that particular part of the slide. It's a small thing, but it means more work for users and that's bad. Use slider that automatically display full images/slides one at a time.

Not bad at all if you ask me.... except it does load a little slow.

Here's a tip, when your website is ready to role, grab you some kids and give them a brief idea of what to do, such as search for a home. Kids will not balk at telling you it sucks and if they can manage it without damaging it, then you got a good thing
