It depends what you are using it for. Most of them don't work for posting on craigslist. I haven't checked out YOURLS yet.

goo.gl is my favorite service. If you need to use your own domain for the short URL, try using this plugin:

YOURLS is a script that you can use on your own webserver.

You then can run your own URL shortener.

E.g. you install YOURLS on 123.com in the subfolder go

You could have short URL's like 123.com/go/dkhZhk4 or like 123.com/go/superoffer

    Very flexible script

    I have used many solutions.

    1. If you have google apps, they have dedicated url shortner there, you can use on your own domain like... yourdomain.com/go/adkgdl

    2. In a Wordpress site, i most of the time use a good plugin, called : Redirection...
very easy to use, and provides good hits data.

    Hope this help,
    Mohsin

    Those are all good recomendations
There seems to be a bunch of these url cloak sites
that generate free traffic for you.
Also, you get to place free adds the more credits you have
Form example hee is a url i wanted to cloak
    http://www.tekteach.com/vaultpromof.html

    I used viral-trafficmater
    igot this
    http://viral-trafficmaster.com/links/7449

if you click on the viral-trafficmaster link lookm at the bottom ofthe screen.
They will run an ad for 10sec.
Since you link was clicked you rack up credits so your ads can run at the bottom of whatever randon site was chosen.

here is a link to site that explains a littlew more
    Viral Traffic Master

I don't have anyfeedback on the conversion rates for theadds.
I do know my links get click on more then before about 30% more.

The covesion come in when I stat to run adds. In one of them I have 350,000 ad credits just for my link being clicked. I can run and a to display 35,00 times over their network.

Does anybody have some contrary comments on this cause I don;t know anythin g about the coversion rates

      1. Congratulations! You are the only one who reads carefully and noticed the age of the thread.
(BTW, the spammer who revived the thread has been deleted but the others were not punished for not reading the dates!)

      2. Can you guys imagine that not every website is WP?

I like to use tize.io because it's pretty simple to use and you actually earn money whenever people click on your link. I haven't earned that much (yet), but it's nice to earn something.

Google url shortener is pretty great as well!

    Top 5 URL Shorteners

    1. bit.ly
Bit.ly is the most popular and one of the oldest URL shorteners. It offers instant tracking, stats, and the ability to have vanity URLs that signify your brand (for example, we use mbist.ro for our parent company, Mediabistro).

    2. goo.gl
Goo.gl is the official URL shortener from Google. It's one of the newer URL shorteners on the block, but it's becoming quite popular on Twitter. It allows you to track when your shortened URLs were created and how many clicks they've received.

    3. Owl.ly
This is the official HootSuite URL shortener, which can be used as a stand-alone shortener on the web, or while logged on to the HootSuite dashboard on the web or mobile.

    4. Deck.ly
This is the official TweetDeck URL shortener, which can be used on the TweetDeck desktop application, Android and Chrome (with support for iPhone and iPad forthcoming). Deck.ly allows you to write tweets longer than 140-characters and either display them within TweetDeck or link to them within another Twitter platform.

    5. Su.pr
Su.pr is StumbleUpon's official URL shortener. It allows you to syndicate content to StumbleUpon, Facebook and Twitter at the same time, suggests the best time of day to post, and allows you to schedule posts in the future.

The following 3 URL shortness might not be ultra popular, but they deserve an honorable mention in this list for offering some innovative features (or just having a really cool name).
