I have a website with a sales page on the root. I then have wordpress installed in a sub-directory where I have a members area with downloads there. I don't want people who visit my sales page to be able to sneek there way into the members area. There won't be any links to the members area on the sales page but I know people can sneek in. What should I do to protect those pages. Thank you.

There are membership plugins that can help protect this. If you want it to be protected by a login, you have to buy/install some software. If you simply don't want people finding it, you can edit your htaccess or robots file but there's no guarantee here that people won't find it.

All it takes is one person to post the link for others.

I know it sucks, but unfortunately there are millions of people who are like that, and will do so without thinking twice.

Go with a membership plugin or something.. simply not being visible to serps is not enough.

There are solutions to prevent downloading directly via a link.

a: some download scripts with protection (not free)
b: some php code that detects the referrer (maybe free)

Are membership plugins like s2 member pretty secure?

So basically no matter what I do people can just post a link to their copy of the pdf? To protect my members area pages, is password protecting them in wordpress just as good as using a membership plugin?

Download protection scripts and the good membership plugins automate the process: only paid customers and/or signed-up members can access the file (or its page) - the login info or the special URL are created for them.

WP passwords means you must create/communicate the password for each and every user.

And your last question open up a completely different issue: while your site and the download on it could be perfectly "protected"... jerks can always go around and share your product AFTER they obtained it legally... it happens almost to everybody.
