Here's my first webpage I'm making for a friend:

It's mostly practice. I noticed here that there weren't many sticky tutorials, if any at all.

Do most people use wordpress? Do people create their own templates? What's the best webhost? What skills are essential for making a good website?

Any tutorial links that are relevant would be welcome..

Also advice and hints on the site are always appreciated.

    Wordpress is best CMS for website developers and sellers. Web hosting is main part of any website and there are lots of webhost in the market like hostgator, bluehost, fatcow and lots and lots. I recommend you to use normal linux hosting if you are not technical person. And highly recommend you to not to go with godaddy for hosting.

    Best advice "check some reviews for web host and than choose which suites you."

    For templates you can use any free as mostly people use free or buy premium which suites their needs. and for website skill wordpress is WYSIWYG editor so you can make at least normal website by watching few tutorials on youtube.
