Hello folks!

New member first post. I was referred here by a friend of mine who also has a small business. I have two small businesses, one of which I started last week. This resource would have been nice to know for my first business!

So I have my webpage up and running and would love to have you guys beat it up for me.

I'm not sure if I should post a graphic of the site or link it. For my first post on the forum, i'd rather not step in it! :-P

Which should I do?

Thank you!
-Dave

We're both new - this is also my first post! I think it would be best to post a link. That way each person can see how it displays with their browser/OS/resolution, and we can view the source code.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got for us.

      Sure thing!

      http://www.zaplabeler.com is my new business.

My father came up with the idea and developed it but has no interest in selling them. I manufacture, market, sell the items and give him a kickback. win/win
I Created this on iWeb. I've heard bad things about iWeb, but I created my last website on iWeb and am now in 3 of the top organic search listings for a variety of search terms. Not sure what the issue is with it.

      Any feedback would be awesome!

I almost passed out when I clicked on the link for your site. Why is it that zaplabeler.com redirects to
    http://www.zaplabeler.com/Manual_Label_Applicator_Machine_for_Boxes,_Square_ Bottles,_Oval_bottles,_Flats_and_Pouches_-_$499.html

Surely you are kidding. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. But, this is not the most ridiculous URL on your site. The URL for your CSS file, which Google could care less about, is:
    http://www.zaplabeler.com/Manual_Label_Applicator_Machine_for_Boxes,_Square_ Bottles,_Oval_bottles,_Flats_and_Pouches_-_$499_files/Manual_Label_Applicator_Machine_for_Boxes,_Square_ Bottles,_Oval_bottles,_Flats_and_Pouches_-_$499.css

I will be interested to see what happens to your website when you change the price, requiring ALL of your URLs to change!

Looks like it could be a good product. I would recommend using a template or hiring someone to create your website.

    Check out themeforest for templates.

Not sure why it redirects exactly.... Built it on iWeb. It does some crazy things... The price won't be changing, but I am adding items. I like the idea of hiring someone to do the site, but I want to be able to change the site on a whim.

Know any short learning curve programs? :-) I keep hearing about Wordpress.

There is no such animal as learning on a whim...
I started WordPress in 2004 when nobody on this forum even heard about it... and still learning something new every day. It is very easy, literally 5 minutes, to install. And everything "easy" stops there. Period.

Changing it (as in customizing it) takes as much as learning XHTML/CSS, which takes years - and anybody that says something different... is lying or they don't know what they are talking about.

Unless it is your hobby to make websites... how come that you can't spend the price of one or two machines you sell to pay a pro to get a normal website? You have a professional product... and you compromise it because you are cheap and not willing to get a similarly professional web presence. Does that make sense to you?

(If web site making is your hobby - get out of the business website and build personal sites for fun!)

Cheap, at the moment, yes... It is a start up and no capital really to play with yet. As my revinue stream builds that sounds like a great plan!

@ZapLabeler I understand being a startup. Been there, done that. Some people don't realize that sometimes that money just isn't there and you need to improvise. That's how I got into web development in the first place several years ago.

Learning html and css isn't really that hard (if you got too much spare time). Your website isn't dynamic at all so using a html template is fairly simple to do. With wordpress it is more complex to make template/functionality customizations however launching a site is fairly simple and there are A LOT of tutorials online.

If I was in your situation, with your knowledge, this is what I would do.

    1. Go over to themeforest.com look under 'site templates'. Find something that goes well with your company.
    2. Once you have the theme purchase it and post this job somewhere: "Upload html theme to server and fill in content". Explain what you need - show a link to your current website and a link to the theme. I am guessing that you can get this done for less than $50 (I truly am guessing, I provide local development services to businesses and charge much more - people in Philippines not so much). You could post this job in the 'warrior for hire' section on this website (never used it, can't vouch for the quality of any members here). Also, there are a lot of freelance websites you can find online to post this job, look around.

Obviously you can't expect top notch quality, however there shouldn't be too much issue transferring your text/images/youtube embed/paypal button over to a theme.

In the future when you get some income rolling in you need to invest in a proper website with a gateway so you can take credit card orders and deal with invoicing/order management etc.

Hope the info helps and good luck with the product.

PS: on second thought, some of the authors on themeforest.com also provide services to load content into their themes so that might be something to look into. Make sure to use someone with a high rating though if you go that route.

I have to agree with Istvan. If you are in business, and you create a website, it should be a showcase for your business. What you have done so far is create a 1-pager, which does not qualify as a website. It is nothing more than a solitary page, which is unlikely to attract the interest of Google.

Andrew gave you some solid advice. Follow it.

It is a good start, the longer you keep at it the the better you will get.

I would start out by increasing the width, changing the left margin since on my screen the top line is running off the right side of the page, changing the font and adding a favicon.

It needs work, the better you get that page the more sales you will make, assuming you can get visitors to it, and considering how little content there is, I doubt you will be getting many from search engines for free.

I am not sure what iweb is but I wonder if it would even allow you to make the needed changes. WP, JOOMLA, or DRUPAL would be a great place to start get a hosting account on Hostgator.com (members here can get you 25% off code if you look and ask around) or something similar....don't have to pay for templates if you simply look around. WP is the easiest to learn.

you might want to consider throwing your product + commission to one of these marketing wiz's here on the board.

I guess I will get on with the site audit.

    the good
    -nice photos
    -personal picture
    -video
    -30 day money back offer
    -made in usa
    -looks like a legit product
    - good descriptions

    the bad
    -nothing really stands out
-highlight and increase important features and offers, etc...
-your on page SEO amounts to ZERO

I see that easy labeler site is what you are going for...if you know that guy personally and if he is making money on his POS site...i would ask him for advice because I don't think you will get much here in terms of design features and functionality

    Hey ZapLabeler
The first thing i noticed is the gray background. Too much negative space. you can try and widen the area where your content is, also add a texture for the background so it's not a flat color only. Also I don't like the gray, the site looks gloomy. A per the layout, its quite alright, and graphics in the page is just about right. Doesn't look busy or cluttered.

Great product, but you will need to have a website designed, start out with a template then get a custom site built as the budget permits. Currently, the design doesn't compliment the product so this will hurt sales. If you're a startup with no money them I'd go with the wordpress idea as stated by Istvan then READ READ READ to make your own customizations. Otherwise... hire someone then you can focus on sales and growth.
