I am curious to know what people's opinions are of mini sites. I've heard that mini sites can be a good thing if used appropriately.

I agree, a lot of companies are using minisites to market/promote their product. However i was informed that minisites are for short term use only.

I believe mini sites are good specially if properly maintained and a real niche authority. IMO

The answer is that it is a bad idea. This topic was discussed in another thread on this forum. The answer to your question may be found in Matt Cutts' video at this Warrior Forum link:

Mini sites were effective when it was easy to rank a thin site based on couple of pages, in search engines.

Now, when Google and search engines are getting advanced every now and then, such sites have no benefit.

However, if you are not relying on search engine traffic and have other sources to get traffic to your mini site(s), then I guess you can go for it.

      Good day,

The Matt Cutts video sums it up overall, but I think it depends on what you're trying to do. I've had a small bit of success with micro sites and am developing a few more as we speak. However, my sites are different than some other micro sites in that they actually offer value. I've thought about going the big site route, but this is already working for me. I figure I can always make an "authority" site later and boost rankings even more.

Yep, better to get a brandable domain name than an MNS (Micro Niche Site).

I think the main ingredient also on why they boomed a few years back is because of their Exact Match Domain. But after Google made an update about it, their ranking went below the usual just that quick.

Mini sites can be very effective if they offer value and are maintained from time to time. If you created a mini site with the intention of adding plr copy that wasn't entertaining or informative them no they are not good. But if you built one with say, 3 pages of really great content that offered value, then mini sites can be very powerful. Sprinkle on some on and off page SEO and you've got a powerful tool that you could use in a number of ways.

Like Skyzer said, get a brandable domain name and offer value and you'll be good.
