I don't know about javascript but there is a site I have found that's really helpful especially for beginners and best of all, it's free! There's several lessons both text and videos - lesson 10 is on css.
Unfortunately, until I reach 15 or more posts, I can't use links in my posts but the site name is "easywebtutorials" (hope that's not breaking any rules). And NO, I am not an affliate so there's no commission - it's a totally Free site, nothing to buy, nothing to promote just a really great, free learning site.
    Best of luck!

I would recommend "CSS: The Missing Manual" for CSS. Can't tell you about Javascript.

The Missing Manual for CSS is outstanding. One of my absolute favorites. However, it may not be the best choice for a complete beginner. Your best bet is to go to a bookstore and scan through some books to see what "clicks" for you.

I definitely recommend you learn as much as possible about CSS before you start to learn JavaScript. The reason I say this, is that JavaScript can manipulate styles ("DHTML"), and if you don't have a foundation of knowledge about CSS already, it is going to be difficult to jump into a study of it.

The problem with books about JavaScript, is there are a lot of bad ones. One good one is: javascript: the Definitive Guide

If you want to leverage your knowledge of CSS in a very powerful and effective way, I also recommend Learning jQueryLearning jQuery

      Hi

I like books by Sitepoint - The CSS Anthology is a good one for your CSS needs, although there are a lot of good tutorials available online

      • To be honest, you can always look at the "Dummies" books. The CSS for Dummies or Java For Dummies.

I know alot of people who have learned alot from them. Now, remember these are only for introduction and only teach you the basics, but if you are completely new at the subjects they give you the material to build your foundation for the languages.

I don't recommend books when it comes to webdesign - I recommend movies. Try some from Lynda.com or TotalTraining.com - you will catch everything very quickly
