Need Plugin or Suggestions for Code (wordpress)

Hey Guys,

I got a wordpress theme that i purchased, there is one thing I dont like... There is an option to show new posts on the homepage, if you turn that on then you select which category you want to show up on the homepage when you make new posts..

The thing i dont like is you can only select one category, so if i make new posts in other categories they wont show up on the homepage... Anyone know a workaround for this or a plugin that gives you the option to select a post to go on the homepage.

It relates to this option:

anyone know if i can make additional options to add more than one category for posts to show up in the homepage?

  • The workaround that comes to mind is adding a category "New Home Page Posts" and use the new category as a second category for posts you want included on the "home".

    You probably would want to use a different category name, I just picked that for this example.

    • You mean add the new category as a subcategory to the category that is set for homepage posts? I thought of that the only thing is for user friendly it wouldnt make sense too much... I tried a few plugins that relate to this but they dont overwrite the theme settings.

      I think most people have problems avoiding having every post showing in the homepage where my problem is the opposite.
  • I think what I need is someone who knows code better than me.. A checkbox option would work over a drop down box (since it limits to one category)... If you seen the code i pasted in the first section it should relate to that so if anyone knows the code to have checkboxes that list the category so i can select the available categories I want to set as posting to homepage.
  • My initial thought was an additional top level category. A post can be assigned to more than one category.

    • Thats how i have it now, i have more than one top category but the way the theme is setup it only allows you to select one category that will show posts on the homepage.

      Even when making a new post on the other categories it will only show up once someone is viewing that category page and not on the homepage.
  • Nationsubmit, You want a checkbox in the edit post screen, if you check it, then that post will display on the home page. If it is unchecked, it won't show up on home page...

    If this is what you want, PM me I will do it for free. It's hardly a 10 minute thing for me. If you want something else, then what you want other than dropdown ? You can also have an ID option, where you put ids of posts there, and it will show up on home page.

    Although this wont work... i tried checking the post options when making a new post that wont show up even as a sticky post... I think its this theme i am using.

    What i need is either a checkbox instead of a dropdown box to select multiple categories to use as homepage posts, or add somewhere in the code the category IDs. can you do either of those ways?

    • The sticky posts wont show coz the query used in the home page is overwritten by the custom query, so even if you check it or not, it won't show up.

      Also I said, I will make a "custom checkbox" not the usual sticky post one.

  • Patrick fixed my problem free of charge, just what i was looking for he added the option to choose which categories i wanted to show up in the homepage. Thanks!
