Best forum software for new business related forum/network

I'm thinking of setting up a business related forum/SN and was wondering if anyone has any advice on which forum software to use?

My plan was to go with WP+BuddyPress, and just use the group forums options, but after looking into it it seems that a more dedicated forum software package might be a better choice.

I've used phpBB3 in the past and each time have had the forum completely hacked with spam to the point where I just gave up on it (even with various security measures) so I'm very reluctant to use phpBB.

I'm a big fan of WP, so bbPress looks good but I'm thinking maybe a more pro forum package such as IPB might be a good way to go? I like the look of IPB but it's $175, and not obviously based on WP.

As for my actual site, I like the idea of a private members only section, and perhaps even allow for some kind of paid member ship, which I'm not sure the free forum options offer. I want to be able to customise the look somewhat and not have it look like all the other 1000s of forums out there (or is that not that important?). It has to be responsive to look good on mobile. Also obviously anti-spam measures are very important.

I keep reading good things about XenForo as well.

Thanks for any advice.

I use vBulletin for the ClickBump support forum. I have no direct knowledge of the others you mentioned.

VBulletin, although its a bit of a steep investment to begin (relatively speaking), I can highly recommend the software. I could not support 5k members without it.

I'd go for VBulletin - it is one of the top if not the best forum software available.

It can be a bit expensive but if you have the user base this won't be an issue.

Lots of support for VB on here, but I've read a lot of negative press about VB, but pretty much only positive views on IPB and XenForo.

I'm not sure why you would choose VB over IPB though?

I'm leaning towards IPB for my social network because their User Profiles look nicer than vBulletin.

But if people are more focused on talking/debating/chatting via messageboard, then vBulletin has a better experience IMO.

VB is obviously popular. I use PHPBB to run a sports forum and it's free whilst being surprisingly reliable. It doesn't have the modularity of 'paid' software but its good if you trying out a forum or community without the need to put down any money.

I tried phpBB but couldn't deal with all the spam. How do you stop the spam?

I use MyBB for my forum. MyBB is free, user friendly and very powerful to handle huge traffic. Lots of inbuilt features, free plugins are available for customizations.
Paid forum software recommendation from me would be XenForo

According to me phpbb is the best forum software, because you can customize it and you can modify the theme too. Its easy to install plugins too

Mods and customization. I think like any forum, you will get spam however even basic things like setting up confirm by email, custom security questions etc will go a long way.

I think VB is used more by the largest forums but PHPBB is at least the second best forum software. Being open source you can literally go a long way in terms of customizing the thing and the community is very good too.
