I know changing passwords regularly and making them very difficult to guess is the most important, but what plugin (as of 2013) is best to reduce risk of site getting infected with virus? I am sure there is some consensus on which is best to do the job.

    Actually, there isn't.

Virus infection on your site is less likely - the bigger issue is the danger of hacking. A malicious script can be placed on your site (WP or not) only if the site gets hacked.

Now, I don't know of any plugin that would prevent hacking, per se.
On the contrary... unfortunately, there are many "commercial" plugins that are poorly coded and leave open backdoors for the evil guys out there.

Decent hosting company that knows their job, safe install and good password, avoinding scripts/plugins/themes from unreliable sources - those help the most.

Howdy! I agree with Istvan. I had a few run-ins with hackers(mostly due to my own fault for not keeping plug-ins updated). They're a bigger worry than viruses.

After my latest run-in with hackers a few months ago, I ended up installing:
    Better WP Security, Sucuri Scanner,
    and Automatic Updater

Seems to be working pretty good so far, knock on wood.

My choice is Wordfence + either Better WP Security or BulletProof Security

If you have a strong password, what's the point in changing it? Difficult to guess is asking for trouble, a strong password, 12+ characters, no dictionary words and upper & lower case & numbers and #$%*& characters is impossible to crack on the web.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

I use bulletproof security and like it. Easy to figure settings etc.
