When doing a 301 redirect, say from site XXX.com to YYY.com, do both sites have to be hosted in with the same company and account?

There are a couple of different ways to do a 301 redirect, the way I do it is place
    PHP Code:
    Redirect 301 http://www.domain.com/
in a .htaccess file, where domain.com is the new domain (which doesn't need to be hosted on the same server)

There are also websites which can tell you if the redirect has been done in an SEO friendly way (although I'm not sure how accurate these are)
    Search Engine Friendly Redirect Checker

    Hope this helps!

No, it need not be on the same server, you can re-direct to any website. (Even to Google.com lol)

No, you can redirect a site hosting on one server to the domain hosting on other server.

  • Hobokook,

To clarify randy’s answer, you don’t have to have both websites in the same hosting provider however you do need to have access to configuration files for at least one of the domains. The domain that you have access to is the only one you will be able to do a redirect for (unless you have root access to both of them). Then (as randyswanston mentions) you can redirect the domain wherever you want.

    Best,

    Shawn
