WOW or NO my webdesign please

One year now the website is online and we invested a lot of time in programming the website and structure. We are programmers and not designers, so we are sure here we can make progress.

What I like to know from you guys/girls, when you get on the site, do you get a WOW feeling or a NO feeling.
If you get that NO, what should we change in the design to make it a WOW.

Index
News
Photo albums
My timeline

Thanks for reviewing the design part of the website.

The homepage (index) is a bit overwelming for a first time visitor. It lacks clear call to action.

I think you need to simplify it a bit, to really guide the visitor to do what you want them to do. If you don't want to change the layout at all, you might use a stronger color on your main call to actions, to try and attract the visitor's eyes to the sign up button for example.

I like the gallery page, does the trick fine and for an internal page like that, the layout works great. News page is alright too, displaying a little odd in my browser though.

Thanks for all your feedback. Can you tell me a bit more about what goes wrong in your browser, what browser do you use?

Thanks for your answer, and I agree with you, just don't know exactly what I should make more simple.
In what way do you mean it, what would you take out and make it more simple?

Hi allegandro, I think the site has a lot of potential but, like the others, I was a little confused about what I was supposed to do... so I clicked on the "New On Tunezup" button.. but that didn't really help me.

I think especially on that Front Page you need some sort of guide. You've already got that large textbox on the front page. I would use that to welcome new visitors and show them how to use your site. maybe a video showing them where to find what they need would work.

    Hope this helps.

too much contrast - try white background
too many red buttons randomly scattered - what is the 1 thing you want customers to do? Focus on one red button
increase white space - bullet point text and increase size of pics
menu on left - make bigger text/boxes to fill space and grab attention

Thanks for the Tips, about the White background I don't know, but we will give it some testing. Other tips sounds good, will for sure take it with us to our new designer.

      Thanks again.

Not bad. Does the job. Maybe add some new web 2.0 elements. Such as nice css3/jquery effects? Also instead of using the plain Verdana font, how about you check out google fonts and try spice it up a bit?

Have you thought about making your website mobile/tablet friendly with some responsive design?

Yes, a mobile website is interesting, we will make an Appwrap, but it will be later this year.
Before we do that, we first want to do an improvement of our home-style, like you say: "We need to spice it up a little"

But i don't know the second time i checked it was looking better for some reason hehe.
Maybe it loaded faster and looked better

design looks good, you may wish to have a never ending listing though, with some filters like highest price/data added, most viewed etc etc.

that way you literally force customers to buy now.

    Hi allegandro,

May I just say that I quite like the overall theme, but I do feel that the introduction text at the top seems a little too cluttered. Perhaps you could try summarising it, or alternatively, list them in bullet point form, so that the viewers can, in a glance, tell what your site is all about.

Could I also add that perhaps the 'About us' segment be placed in a more prominent location, instead of at the bottom, where it currently is. If you do it in point form as well, and place it prominently maybe towards the top, the viewers will know about your site more clearly, and know that it is a social network site and not an online store, haha.

Otherwise, the visual theme for the site is quite simple and consistent, which is good!

    Keep it up!

    Cheers,

Would you change it before or after the traffic comes in?

Good point, I'm preparing a intro video, that will come on the place of the big block text on top. in 60 seconds it has to explain, what we are and what you can do.

I would send the email blasts after i update the layout. You can use it as a marketing stunt. Say you find someone to market and you tell them, i will bring traffic in to get you noticed and when you do the update you can just blast out an email saying something like "we remodeled our site, now you can do this easier etccc come check it out" and have the add as a pop up or something or in the email address

The Index and News page looks a bit too busy. There's a lot to click on so my attention is drawn to everything on the page instead. I'd think about the main focus on the page and draw the readers eyes to that section. Then give users a clear choice of navigation to other areas. That way I can focus on the main content and not get distracted with everything else around it.

Albums is good because the the thumbnails are a good size so my eyes stay focused on appreciating the different pics at the centre of the page.

I can see a lot of work has gone into this site, well done.

Thanks, the Idea is to add a video of 60 seconds in the top block, in 60 seconds it would explain all about the website, what you can do, how good it is and why you really want to join us.
Using a video and removing the text will make the home page less busy.

Good idea, that would be really helpful to assist people with a quick intro on what to expect and where to find key parts of the site. Don't forget to sound warm and excited that they are there

The most obvious indicators of amateur design is the typography and the coloring.

The font needs to adjust line-height (increase), coloring (make it more of a dark grey than a hard black), justification (only do left-align for the home page intro text).

Get rid of the nasty gradient effects on the tabs, it looks so old and like something from the 90's. Try using solid colors or have more of a clean border effect. You can apply a little drop shadow over the edge of tabs and module boxes if you like. Don't do too much border effect.

It looks like you're using an old social media site script (something designed in the mid 2000's) and needs to be badly designed. It wouldn't take too much work for a designer to adjust your CSS and come up with something much cleaner.

Thanks very useful feedback. As I mentioned before, we didn't take a designer, we focused on programming only, and now the time comes to add some design to it, to make it one style in the entire website.
You noticed we used to many different kind of the same colour, 1 Red should do the trick, not 10 like now. So thanks again, very helpful feedback.

I know you have spent a long time on this but i find it a little messy, the logo looks fine and is well positioned, i would definitely remove the dark background and the car background and replace it with a lighter colour as its taking my eyes away from the actual content, on the timeline page it all seems to blend into one rather than separate events, i also think the styling of the rewards could be improved maybe

Thanks, for your feedback. In fact the design was not that much time, but we now need to put time in it to make it look fly.
The car background is a user based uploaded background, users can do that them self's. In my case I choose to some a lot of cars, but it could be anything. Like people can do it on Twitter.
      Thanks for the good feedback.

First impressions and all that, right? Generally, I like the design layout and color choices, but I do have a few thoughts, mostly having to do with the flow of the index page.

If at all possible, I would group together the login items, since the FB and Twitter login options would make more sense combined with the Login - Join Us from the top bar. I would move all of them to the right side top, with the FB and Twitter below the Login and Join options.

I find all the little pictures a bit overwhelming and you have two sections for car sales, parts and events, which may be confusing to visitors. Again, this comes down to logical flow. I would rather see a tabbed section for the five areas: Car Sales, Parts, Shops, Events and Photo Albums. Keep the tabbed area in the same space occupied now by those five, but using tabs to give you more real estate for each section. This way, you could use slighter larger photos and still have room to have some text describing the benefit of each section to your visitor, You could then eliminate the duplicated areas that appear below those five and instead have more room for your remaining two sections, About and Becoming a Member.

Another alternative to tabbing those sections might be to set the photos for each section into a slide show instead of individual pix, again gaining more room for text to draw traffic.

OK, one final comment. The bottom three boxes, Parts, About and Become a Member are a tad too narrow to look right with justified type as the breaks that fall in the middle of lines create holes that distract the reader. Justified works fine on wider sections, but when the space is too narrow, it just doesn't look good. And if you remove those duplicated sections, you could let About and Becoming both have 50% width and the justified type would then look fine.

Hope this all made sense! All in all, I think the site is great and looks like a fun place to hang out!
