I've been doing some IM for a while. Nothing big though. Just banner ads and such. I did build a wordpress blog. I took me a while, but not too challenging.

Well, my brother and his wife just bought a restaurant. And they've spent the last 2 months getting up to a higher standard that it was before and they've done awesome. They even won "Best Steak in Town" recently.

But they approached me about fixing up their website. I checked out what the previous owner had made.... it was awful. Like it was built in 1995 and never updated. Just horrible looking.

I have found a few wordpress themes that would be perfect and I know I can just get new hosting, upload the theme, put in their pictures and information.

But, how can I build and work on a site, without it being live? I want their old site to stay up, until the new is ready, then just replace it all at once. That way they can look and make changes before it all goes live.

Also, I need to transfer that domain to my godaddy account. Not sure how to go about that either. I have my own hostgator, so I won't need their previous hosting.

So, those two things are all I need help with:

*How to transfer the domain to me?

*How to build the site offline and do an all at once replace?

Thanks guys!

It would depend what knowledge you have in terms of coding. I would use Notepadd++ to write my code, and you could preview it in any browser. There are also programs like Dreamweaver which you could use. I don't think you could run a Wordpress website without hosting, unless you download a database -- which I'm not experienced with. There should be tutorials all over the internet though! :]

When your website is all ready to go online, I would use FileZilla, or something similar to upload to the server.

You can use xampp which would display on your local computer without uploading to a host. So if you wanted to use wordpress you could build the site on your local computer till you where happy with it then upload it to your hosting.

Ref: How to Install Wordpress on XAMPP: 13 Steps (with Pictures)

If you don't want to do that (XAMPP) you could build the entire site on a sub-domain of your hosting till you are happy with it.

Just Google how to transfer domain "how to transfer domain from X"

    1. The domain has to be transferred by the previous owner to you - or your brother.
Also, be aware (if you are doing websites you should know this, btw) there are 2 [TWO] things when it comes about domains... and most beginners mix them up:
    - the process of registering, which is done by a registrar
    - the hosting which is performed by a host company

Best practice: keep it separate, i.e. don't have both with the same company!

GD can be a registrar and HG should be host only.

    2. As it was said above: XAMPP.

p.s. According to your description your brother and his wife did a very professional job with the restaurant. Are you sure you are up to their pro level with your rudimentary knowledge of website building? Just asking...
