Unblockable Popup Alternatives?

I remember recently reading of a window that can appear on a page that can't be blocked by standard popup blockers.

Can anyone fill me on what these are called and if they are really a good alternative to popups?

    The only way to really have something popup on a screen which isn't blockable is to use a hidden div on the page and then display it when it needs to pop. There are plenty of programs out there that do light boxes, these are the same principle, the material is on the page in a hidden div and then when needed the div displays.

    Technically it isn't a popup window as it is part of the physical page, but you can use CSS to style it to it looks like a popup window and you can even use an iframe to populate it dynamically if you don't want to put static material in it.
