Can I use Genesis framework out of the box?

It looks like a lot of bloggers buy a theme on top of the Genesis framework. Do I have to buy Genesis and also buy a theme for it, or can I use Genesis on its own? I'm not looking to adjust any of the code, just adjust the standard settings in wordpress.

    Hi,

Once you have the framework, you can buy any theme that is built on the Genesis framework. It comes with some standard ones, but people have gotten extremely creative and have customized some beautiful themes, IMHO.

    Hope this helps!

Genesis is a framework. It has themes that go over it.

I recommend buying their bundle package.

That way you get the Genesis framework, and all of their addon themes.

Additionally, you get free lifetime updates, and free access to any future themes that they develop.

That's the best value by far.

Is there any reason not to use the Genesis framework on its own without using a child theme?

The benefit of using a child theme is that when you update the framework (Genesis), you don't lose any customization you have done in the child theme. It's been awhile since I looked at it, but if I recall right, Genesis by itself is pretty bare bones and not so pretty. I personally don't see why you would just buy Genesis by itself, unless you plan to upgrade and get a child theme (or a few) later.

I'm not looking for anything too flashy, just a basic theme that is organized well. That is why I considered Genesis on its own. If you don't recommend this, I will search for something other than Genesis.

I don't mean to say Genesis by itself wouldn't be a viable option, I just think you really limit yourself if you use it by itself. This is coming from someone that likes to mess with stuff though. At least if you do get it and change your mind about child themes later, your options are open.
