Hey Guys and Gals.

I have little to no experiance with web design. I want to start doing authority sites and niche sites for SEO.

Can anyone recommend a good Wordpress theme or Web Design learning strategy for me? I would really appreciate it as my brain is overloaded and overwhelmed with the amount of info out there.

I want to be as efficient as possible. I dont want to be a HTML coding master if I dont have to be. I just want to make professional and awesome looking websites.

Thanks guys.

Download a theme which you can edit into your base theme.

Sounds like wordpress is your best option, being you don't want to do HTML. There are 1,000's of theme's that are professional looking.

But saying what theme is best for you and your plan, is about impossible. You need to figure out what you want the site to do, how you want it to look and then search for your theme.

It's like saying you want a car, which should you get? Depends

Often too, it's a personal preference as to what theme's people use.

It wouldn't hurt, really you just need the basics with HTML. But most of wordpress is either PHP or CSS. Most of wordpress is just finding the right php code to use, it's pretty much all php code snipets type coding. This code to do this, another code to do something else. Like little building blocks.

For example, I want to list my posts here, this is the code I need to use. So it's not so much coding, but just using the right pre-made code.

Another thought, when you do run into something you need to fix or change, since wordpress is so popular, you can usually find the answers with search engines. What I do.

If you learn how to edit PHP code properly, that's a big part of messing with WP.

And of Course CSS is for the layout, so depends on how much you want to mess with the layout.

When I mess with either the php or css of wordpress, I''ll do the change, upload it and see what happens. Many times, opps.. that didn't work right. Go back and undo the change. Same with CSS.

As for CSS, that is finding the right code to change in the stylesheet. Good theme's will have the stylesheet labeled well. Defining each section, so it's not that difficult to find what you need. Then it's just changing values, like font sizes, colors, ect.

Best way to get started is to install wordpress somewhere that's not public and mess around with it.

Download or buy a Nice web design theme, and "play around" with it, with HTML and CSS.

You dont have to be a master, but you must know the basics...

How much of the basics I guess is my question? I dont have a problem with that but I don't want to take it further than I need to.

You will want to understand Cascading Style Sheets. You'll need to know: how to put styles in a .css file, how to use a link tag to load that .css file into a template, the format of a CSS selector (the rule that says "the following styles apply to these HTML elements"), and basic utility style flags such as margin, padding, background, font-family (and various other font-* attributes), text-align, float and clear, height and width.

It's not as daunting a list as it might look. The only parts that will give most people any trouble whatsoever, are the HTML div tag, and the CSS float/clear logic. Easiest way to test is, skip the web server - do your lessons in a Desktop folder. Ctrl-O in your browser to open your HelloWorld.html.

        Wow....thank you so much.

    this works so much better
anotherwords it works with someones ip address
if your searching for something it will automatically come up with their town in the search
works 100x better (build an asp site) you don't have to update it at all whereas you do with wordpress

You don't have to learn html at all. just become familliar with the WP admin panel and that's it.

There are thousands of WP themes available.

Just enter the type of theme (industry, particular niche you need) and finish it with wordpress theme. There are amazing bloggers who spend time and grouped it properly.

For SEO use WP plugins that will prevent you from digging into code by yourself.

    This s*it works!

Thanks dude. I wish I read this a week ago. I dont need to know sh** about coding I finally figured out (no offense coders). I can get a badass website designed all with WP, about 95% complete. If I need any minor tweaking....Ill just hire someone from India for $25.

Yes, there are thousands of Wordpress themes available - to be on the safe side, if you are sticking with free themes, you might consider getting them all from wordpress.org.

Just keep in mind that each of them have their strengths and limitations. When you find you can't do something with a theme, don't automatically assume that it is "you" that is the problem - it may be the theme. Just define your problem into a Google search and most likely someone else has solved the problem already.

Yea it seems the free themes are not as customizable as the paid themes. Correct?

Depends on the theme. Some free ones are highly customizable. Woo theme's are one of those, least from the ones I've used.

Just a word of caution with free themes: most are great, but there are many that have Base64 code hidden in the footer or other php file. These can make your site spread viruses, porn or other nasties without you knowing it...until Google identifies you as a malicious site or your host shuts you down. That's why I always buy themes from reputable sources like WooThemes or create original themes.

That said, if you find just the perfect free theme, use a plugin like Theme Authenticity Checker to make sure it's clean.

Thanks for this- Theme Authenticity Checker - went to their site and it looks like the plugin also points out where the obfuscated code is and where the links go to, so potentially you could clean it up and use it.

Very good point! Course the other thing with free theme's, along the same lines, is that they often come with backlinks in the footer that can't be removed as well.
