    I used teamtreehouse.com They cover a lot of BASICS. From WP to HTML and PHP. Mobile and Photoshop also. Again it's just the basics but it did help. If I remember right it was around $25/month with no contract.

    It's all video tutorials with quiz's at the end of each lesson. The videos are pretty high quality.

    You should learn some basic CSS out of books or from websites like Webdesigntuts.
    Seach with Google what you want to design and practice.

    Then learn basic photoshop/Gimp for predesign.

    When you have learned that you can also learn some php to customize wordpress-css/php (or any other platform) or a grid design language (bootstrap...).

    I highly recommend you learn basic HTML and then learn how to edit existing wordpress templates. That's a good way to get up and running quickly and be able to make real-world changes. Or of course, you could learn how to design from scratch and take years to turn out anything professional. It's easier to adjust something that's already out there and close to your liking.

    I am self taught and have managed to do quite a lot with wordpress,
    using HTML and child themes.
    I am putting together some free training. It's not meant to be comprehensive, more what you need to get things done.

    You can use W3Scools to learn basic website design, but you should have creativity to make it better, like Web design is also like Music where you can learn basic, but you should have your own creativity to make it on another level.

    You can try out webflow.com. Awesome drag and drop with tons of unbelievable features. Supports import of custom codes and you can generate a clean CSS, HTML and Java code for your website. I use them alot as it gives me the same thing as i would get writing long codes from scratch and dealing with bugs and all that. Check our company web portfolio here. Awesome designs with sleek animations

  • First learn HTML and CSS. A good resource will be this w3schools.com. Once you are done with HTML and CSS, you will need to create your web-page interactive which basically means to respond on user actions. For this learn basic Javascript and then move to jQuery section which is basically a Javascript library. Now when you are done with front-end development, you will like to learn back-end development too, which means doing the job on the server-side(for example getting data from the database). I will recommend PHP or node.js... There are also other languages like Ruby on Rails etc. But I will go with PHP or node.js because both have good amount of resources available on internet, especially PHP.
