Rockettheme / Elegant Themes templates : when can one change the copyright after customization?

Hi all,

I would like to know when can one change the template copyright to a own one after a customisation (especially after a customization from template providers like rockettheme or elegant themes).

      Yes, I did : I must have a developer licence in order to be able to remove their copyright but they do not say if I can then put mine/our client brand.

            Yes, it is called "business expenses". Since you were referring to having 'clients' - you run a business, don't you? So, what's the problem?

              I am just starting and presently I am trying to built a portfolio and for this purpose I am not sure that could put my own copyright.

                I don't really understand your point. You can put a copyright only to your own template. If the template is customized, but still undoubtedly Rocket's template, how can this be copyrighted as your template?
                You can stamp the content of your site, but not the template.

                If you started with Rocket's template, but customized it so much during the process that you practically made a new template from scratch, without any need or connection to Rocket, then you didn't need their template at all and don't need any permission to stamp it as yours.

    In fact, I have three of my own responsive templates that are based on gantry-framework/gantry template (developed by Rockettheme team under GPL License) and are compatible only with a rockettheme module. I read Rochettheme TOS again and apparently the php files are under GPL License. As, all the css files from these three template are developed from scratch normally it will be fine to put my copyright.

    For the rest of templates previously used and highly customised, I could only put rockettheme copyright or remove it (according to my Rockettheme developer License).

    However, presently I prefer to only develop my new templates using Boostrap but it may take few weeks for design and development.

      Do you mean cmodifying the template and trying to brand it as your own, or do you mean change the copyright (usually) in the footer of sites you build?

      If it's the latter, you should be able to without any issues. The footer of a theme is stored in a php file, and the php files of all WordPress themes and plugins are always GPL, even in themes where the author tries to pull the split license trick.

      If it's the former, just read the company's licensing information. If their themes are 100% GPL, then you can do as you please with them, including modifying them and relabeling them as your own.

      Elegant Themes License Info

      From what I can find, Elegant Themes use 100% GPL for their themes (but not the .PSD files), so go nuts with them.

      Rocket Theme License Info

      It looks like Rocket Theme uses a split license for most of their WordPress themes. You can reuse the PHP files, but nothing else (CSS, images, PSD's, etc.). Just Googling around, it does seem Rocket Theme does offer a few 100% GPL WordPress themes.

      The official WordPress website has a list of theme shops which offer (I believe) 100% GPL themes.

      There are even a few WordPress themes on Theme Forest that are 100% GPL.

      Just be sure to read the theme shop's licensing information before you do anything.

        Are Elegant Themes products responsive (mobile devices,etc...)?

          Yes. If you go to the theme previews, and (assuming you're on a desktop/laptop) readjust your browser window so that it's more of an upright rectangular shape, you'll see that the pages will automatically readjust themselves.
