Does anyone use AWS Amazon for hosting WP?

Just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with using the Amazon Cloud servers to host WordPress onto what is called a "micro instance".

Its supposed to be free the first year and very fast if set up correctly. I just created an free account there, but seems like a lot of hoops to jump through to just set things up.

More of a programer's level of set up it seems, but maybe something that can be farmed out to a decent Fiverr guy.

My concern also is the free claim.

If you want something done right, you'd be best not using fiverr.

Setting up AWS is strictly a job for a pro, not Joe blow working out of his mums basement for 5 bucks.

Good point, I was thinking about that, too. Already did a search on fiverr and seemed pretty slim pickings on people that claim to have experience and good reviews on AWS.

It amounts to running an unmanaged vps with all the associated configuration issues. You would need to constantly be aware of the security issues that come up regularly. Endless patches and updates.
Not for the faint of heart except for a hobby site. I would prefer to pay for shared hosting or a VPS with WHM/cPanel.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

It sounds like the level of upkeep that you're saying is not worth the savings, even if I found a low cost alternative to set it up. I would say that's exactly what I needed to know, thanks Robin.

Guess it's back to weeding through the hosting providers... again. ugg

Amazon's AWS isn't really hosting in the traditional sense.
I'd suggest avoiding it for something as simple as WordPress.
There are much better hosts out there for this.

Yes, quite a lot, for sure! Just wanted to get the best value and have the flexibility of growing without extra upfront costs, also these days speed plays a huge factor in seo, but sure don't need the extra hoops right now...

I had been entertaining the thought as well, but as other people have said, I quickly realized that the project was going to take a lot of my attention away from actually getting my project/idea out to the public...like you mentioned extra hoops.

I would love to hear from someone who has actually run a wordpress site on AWS though or even a plain html site (that seems a lot less complicated).

There was a WSO a while back, you may find someone who did it in that thread.

Well, here's what I ended up doing, at least for now:

I discovered a great hosting provider via research here on the WF and although I'd love to give credit to the well informed gentleman that recommended APlus hosting, I can't seem to find him now.

Anyway, they offer a great deal for 10.00 per month.
Just to highlight: 200 GB storage, 2 TB transfer, 1 free domain. Wow, 2 TB? Pretty amazing I think. I did an online chat with a support guy and was set up in minuets. A very well or organized site with lots of extra benefits and with a free domain, that helped cover some expense for the first month.

For those still interested in Amazon hosting for WP, I did find a free plugin that's called WP2Cloud in the WordPress Directory. Seems pretty good but didn't go through it entirely. If anyone has any experience in this plugin, let us know, I'm sure that would be very appreciated.
