Simple membership site that a complete newbie can manage?

Hey everyone,

I have a question but let me just tell you what i am thinking so you experts out there can better answer

What I want is a site that has a login and password feature (with the Forgot Password function), and I need it to "release" content over time. Now I have read around and know that this is possible, and I think I heard drupal as being one that can provide that. Also maybe I heard Joomla, but I am not sure.

But that is besides the point.

I also would like a sort of personal "log" for each member, somewhere where after they finish the weeks training and exercises, they can type in there progress and other custom fields put in by me. Then after the program they can print it all out without it being to difficult. So like once they submit their weeks info it would go to one big long page with all their submitted content in succession.

The reason I am asking, is because at first I was going to use Joomla or drupal, but read somewhere, i cant remember where, that joomla and drupal may be difficult for new users or un-techie people to use. They suggested wordpress. But I dont see how wordpress would work, it doesnt make sense to me!

So i guess what I would like to know is, if you all have any suggestions on what to use, something that fits the above mentioned criteria, and that would be easy for a non-techie to setup and manage.

Also I am on an extremely tight budget so something free or cheap would be best, although if you have an expensive suggestion please tell me, if I like the sound of it I may just need to wait a while before getting started.

Sorry if this is confusing, I am not entirely sure I even know what I am going on about lol

Ashley

ps..If I have a site that has 5000 mb of space, how many members could one have before having to upgrade, its not that I think my site will be that big, but I am just wondering. Like how much space would usernames and passwords take up?

Do you need it to release content over time in general, or content over time per user. (E.G. every 1st of the month, post new link to everyone, OR every month give X user next link in series)

I would need it to release content per user. So it would be like an autoresponder, once someone joins they start the sequence.

But something i wanted to add is that i actually have the butterfly marketing script, which is a membership script. But I heard that you shouldnt use it as it is, that it needs to be altered or bits changed. And like i said i am a very non-technical person so i dont think i could do this. But does anyone know if this is true? Do you think it would be fine to use as it is without any alterations to the script?

Also do you think the BF script can release content over time per user?

      Thanks for the help.

You can use Joomla. It has a built in membership database and there's some extensions that can take care of the newsletter. I'm not to familiar with it, but I did see those things when I was browsing around earlier

Full of plugins(called components and modules in joomla)...for paid plugins you will find all at portaliz dot com.
As I've read you will need LMS-Silver for your courses-academy, Community Builder for your members own pages, Communicator for newsletter/responder, if you want a paid membership included directly on it try RegistrationPro, sh404SEF for url_rewriting, to manage events JCalPro, JDefender against php/mysql injections and as you count to have lots of members you need to accelerate caches with JRECache.
DOn't worry with 5Gb of webspace, you can have easily +1000Members(depends if they are able to insert images, video, audio or not)
If you want other tips about Joomla, feel free to PM
wow thanks, Are all those plugins easy to install or integrate into the basic joomla? As i said i am not very techie.

      Thanks

If you aren't comfortable installing Joomla or any of the plugins (modules) I would suggest outsourcing this on elance. You should be able to Joomla and all the modules installed for $20 or less. I'm not sure what your budget is but if your not very techie like me, this is a good way to go in my opinion.

Oh wow i didnt realize it would cost that little. yes i am a very techinically challenged, but am also worried about outsourcing this.

I remember hearing that when you hire people off of elance or rentacoder that you need to be in contact or keep them on target.

          Is this so?
or will installing joomla and the modules be quick and easy for someone like this?

          Thanks again

Try joomla. It may fulfill your requirements to certain extent I think.

I think you need to talk to a couple of techies. What sort of course? What sort of standard content? Are you going to be posting articles as in a blog. Are you going to be accepting payment? You had better ask a lot of questions first.
For all you know blogspot may be good enough. If you are not worried overly by SEO this may be an option.
Blogger and the likes are near nil cost $ 10 per year with some design and other disadvantages.
Wordpress becomes more expensive since you will need your own domain name and hosting space.
Joomla is even harder to implement.
Seriously consider blogger but do so after examining long run implications.

Thanks for the reply, this is exactly what I am doing. After seeing so many options, I am just going to go through and look at every option and see if it can do what i want. Also I am thinking about hiring a friend of my brothers. he is a programmer, he isnt cheap, but he should be able to get things rolling for me. At this point, I dont want to twoddle around worrying about this so much and just want to get it out of my head so i can worry about the content and such.

      thanks again!

Joomla for free or low cost.
Membergate dot com for a robust, out-of-the-box solution.
