Converting old html site to wordpress...seo issue?

Hi Gang

Wasn't sure whether this should be for the SEO forum or Wordpress. Anyway, I have an old site which I created in dreamweaver, and now I'm start from scratch with a wordpress site. Ideally, I want to keep the inner page urls the same in the wordpress version, but it means that I will have to name them without the hyphens. For example, where as wordpress would create something like theis mysite/best-bikes-in-britain , I will have to have it like this mysite/bestbikesinbritain ...so my questions it, is t better from an seo point of view to have the words seperated with hyphens, or doesn't it really make much difference???

Cheers
Phil

  • What really makes the difference is that you do proper 301 redirects from your old URLs to the new ones.

    • Crikey, what are they? So, do you mean instead of deleting my old pages, I should change them to re-directing to the new urls? Or do I only have to do that if I'm wanting to use different urls for my new pages?

      Cheers

  • Also, don't forget that when writing/editing a post you can edit the "slug" as well...
In WP terminology the 'permalink' (right under the title whem editing) is called slug - the part of the URL that is created from your post title by WP.

Which means, if you want and have the time to do it - you can have permalinks without hyphens.

    • Thanks Istvan - So you think then that is doesn't really matter from an SEO point of view of all the words are together without hyphens?

      Thanks
      Phil
