Updating WordPress Theme..

I downloaded a paid wordpress theme for free when I was starting my business, it was a much older theme version but my intentions at the time was to purchase it once I had more cash flow.

Now thankfully, since my business has picked up I want to purchase the theme as promised. However, I don't want to lose any of my data and customization I created with the downloaded one.

Once I purchase my theme, is it as easy as just simply updated the WP theme through the dashboard itself to have the newest one legally?

If you did customizations directly to the theme files and you didn't create a child theme you will probably lose customizations. If you did them through the theme's control panel and it's saved in your DB you won't lose the customizations usually.

Really it depends on the theme and how the customizations were made.

  You shouldn't lose the customizations.
  
  If you changed any of the theme files, create a Child theme and copy all the files you edited to the child theme directory before you upgrade.

If you can afford it, I would back everything up with a plugin such as Backup Buddy or Vault Press just in case. I recommend these plugins to all my plugins anyways...not just for upgrading purposes. You never know when your site will get hacked or something will go wrong...it's really just peace of mind.

By the way you don't need to spend money to clone your site use WordPress › Duplicator « WordPress Plugins it's free. So even if you destroy your site you have a fully working clone.

I disagree with you. It usually backs up everything included files unrelated to WordPress. Of course it's good to test your backup but it usually gets everything included unrelated files and folders.

It doesn't back up widgets...I've done lots of site transfers and widgets are not backed up unless you're using a specific plugin for this. I've had sites with tons of stuff in widgets in the sidebar and footer widgets and they always have to be redone.

correct! You can first go to the plugins and download a file backup. I really doubt you will need to ever use it but you never know.

  Learning how to code a theme from scratch is one thing...tweaking an existing theme is another. If you don't know how to code, I would recommend that you start learning HTML and CSS (w3schools). You should also learn how to use Firebug (lots of youtube videos).
