My questions:

where did this design style originate from?
is this more effective than traditional wordpress design funnels we've seen?
what are the best wordpress themes to initiate these designs?

    Wrong comparison... at least one of those examples is WordPress!

    Design and site engine are 2 different things - you can present your data (in the case of a dynamic, database driven site) in any way you wish. The limit is the sky... if you know CSS

    Search for "flat ui design" and you will see lots of examples.

    As for the "effectiveness" (whatever that means for each person) it has to be tested and tested and tested...

    Actually there are quite a few Wordpress theme's that will do that for you. Can't think of a name off hand, plus I've seen so many lately. Usually they are one page or portfolio type theme's.
