How to Securely Outsource Website Work?

Hi,

This maybe a weird question, but how do you go about hiring someone to work on a site for you in a secure way?

Is there such thing as giving someone access to say...taking a way my old site and building a new one, or just making changes to the current one, without giving them full access to everything? I feel like a long time ago I learned something about this...like giving the person their own database and then setting permissions only for the site they have to work on. Hahaha. I'm obviously not a pro here, so excuse my description above. But if any of you have any resources or links you wouldn't mind sharing, I'm trying to find out more info on how to do this. Or if you have tips on how to safely and securely outsource web work. (I'm looking to find someone to work on my client's website...and thinking of hiring from elance or something similar. I'm also interested for future work I might need done on my own sites so this info would be extremely helpful). Thank you!!

I would guess that it would probably be best to create a test site, let them have access to that and once everything is working you could then shift whatever files you need across to your proper site.

or maybe a better question--when you get people on elance to work on your website...do you just give them all login info? Even your cpanel login? I've just never done this before so any advice on hiring people off of the freelance sites to do web work would be appreciated. Like, any things I should avoid doing, or any precautions I should take. Thanks!

Just make sure you have a restorable backup and check up on them. Don't give them access to anything they don't need to access, that means if you have shared hosting other than reseller, you can't give them cPanel access.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

It totally depends upon the nature of the work you want to do. For instance, if you need to change the design of website, you can hire a web designer or outsource the work to a web design company. If you want to work on content you can hire a content writer or outsource the work to a data outsourcing company

right and i understand that....the question is about security and if i do outsource web work to someone from elance, how do i let them do their thing in a secure way. for example, robinintexas said that i can't give cpanel access. so then the question becomes, how do they work on the site without this?

A reseller panel would always do good, as you can have WHM access and can also setup backups daily so this way in case they choose to walk away tmr, your backup is good from yesterday or the last time it ran.

Without cPanel, there is some possibility to do it still, I simply provide a ftp account with its own space, along with premade blank databases for them to use (if they need it), this way they don't have to ask me every single time. A set of 3-6 would be good.

This way if they need something they can communicate with me, helps build trust as well, but most of the time, thats all I ever need, is just ftp access and phpmyadmin access if i dont have any blank databases made for me already.

Actually it depends on the type of website and the motive for which the website is built. If it is regarding important business or something, better you should consult a pro. Doing it yourself may cost you more and may not successfully serve the purpose its meant for.Eceltic - Data Entry Service

One way, set up a separate FTP account just for them, restrict the access to only a new folder you create and move a copy of your website files into here, once they have finished you can move the files to your website root and delete the added ftp account & folder as it will be no longer needed, removing any future access....

This way, site will be built on your server and they will only have access to one copy of your site. I would never give any outsource access to my control panels.....
