How did you go from amateur designs to professional designs?

I'm just beginning to learn HTML and CSS and so far my designs look very amateurish (think 90s webpages). I'm curious how you guys went from amateur designs to something that looks pretty good. Did you just keep tweaking to get there or was there some other factor like a book or course that taught you how to have an eye for design?

It's perfectly normal to be amateurish at the beginning, everybody's starting from the bottom.
Just by practicing, working on your skills daily will get you to the next level. Read books, watch courses, inspirational galleries, read magazines.

If you look at for example ElegantThemes.com, and their early themes - that's light years from today. It's the same story for everyone. I'm a shame sometimes when I look my old code, and what mistakes I did, but we gotta go through that.

My coworker designer, he also can't stand the themes he used to designed, feels a shame
My advice is - just do what you love, work on it, practice daily.
Internet is great resource of knowledge. Consider yourself lucky

Exactly what WPcrew said, basically practice makes perfect, however majority of designs all have something in common, like a pattern. Such as sleek, modern, clean, or web 2.0 designs. They are all different but you see them everyday without noticing, once you train your visual eyes to pick up more details and get used to common things, youll be able to design attractive themes. Once you got the coding down, the next step would be visual interactivity with jquery, mootools, etc etc. But thats for a later date!

    Good luck on your journey!

I think it all comes down to experience.

The more you do it the more you will start noticing little subtleties here and there which will start taking you from the amateur to intermediate and then to advanced.

What helped me specifically was practicing it on daily basis, reading books about it and also having good mentors around me.

It also helps when you do other things outside of that area of expertise such as going to the gym, reading books unrelated to the subject, horse riding... you name it!

The reason I say those things could be helpful as well because the more you do new things the more you expand your perspective in general which consequently helps you to think about current problems in different ways.

    Hope this answered your question
