Wordpress Church Themes

See ChurchWP.net for a very informative site by a pastor and web designer that helps churches pick the right WordPress theme.

I'm familiar with what's out there since I make church WordPress themes for a living. Every theme seller I know will encourage you to buy their theme and use it for a client site. My recommendation is to go with themes that are newer, have no lock-in effect (custom post types, shortcodes, etc. should be in a plugin, not the theme), include support and that are made by Christians who are involved in a church (they understand the needs better). A 100% GPL license is preferred as well.

With that said, these are my recommendations:

churchthemes.com - my project, uses Church Theme Content plugin to avoid lock in
Forgiven by Justin Scheetz - newer theme that does things right, uses my plugin
Outreach Pro by StudioPress - as noted, StudioPress is excellent, no post types baked in
WP for Church - project by a church planter, uses their plugin
Organized Themes - Bill Robbins was probably the first to make church themes

Keep an eye on these too:

UpThemes - should release a church theme soon using my plugin
Lift Themes - very talented designer working on a church theme

Some other options are below. They may or may not avoid the lock-in effect.

Church Themer / Mint Themes
ThemeForest: Church - lock-in effect is common, a few are good
Mojo Themes: Church - not usually as nice as ThemeForest, but 100% GPL
Vandelay Design - free church themes

You can also use a general purpose theme and add plugins for sermons, events, etc. but the appearance of the theme and plugin may not mesh as well as the above options:
