What if a theme can't do what you want it to?

I really like the way this website looks and how it is laid out.

Powerful Intentions: Law of Attraction Community - Powerful Intentions is a unique Law of Attraction Online Community

But, it seems to be a social networking platform created by ning.com. I tried to see if wordpress had a theme like it. I found this theme from buddypress that looks very similar. The theme is called Buddy:

WordPress - Buddy: Multi-purpose WordPress & BuddyPress Theme | ThemeForest

I would rather pay a one time payment for the Buddy theme rather than a reoccurring monthly payment for the ning one. But, I seriously doubt that either one of them is going to be able to do everything that I want them to.

What if a theme can't do everything you want it to do? Can you pay someone to change the program so that it can? Is that something any web designer can do? Would they be able to change someone else's theme or would you have to get someone to build a theme from scratch? How does that work?

Thanks

The short answer is if you have the willingness to pay, you can get most anything done.

Keep in mind there is a vast difference between a 'web designer' and a developer that specializes in WordPress. The designer makes it look like you want it to, the developer makes it act like you want it to. Most of the *really good* WP developers I know can't design for squat, nor do they want to. And it's very rare to find a top-notch visual and UI designer that also is an expert developer.

Why use WP if you need a social networking software? Take a look at this Dolphin Demo

Thanks for pointing that out Steve. I didn't know the difference. Sounds like that could be a problem then getting it to look and act the way I want it to, whether I get a developer or a web designer.

I didn't realize there was social networking software that didn't charge monthly fees. This dolphin demo look interesting. And it appears to have a one time payment which is good. But, again, it probably can't do everything I want it to do. I'll look into that some more though, maybe I can modify it. Thanks.

Do I really need a social networking software? Does wordpress have nothing that can compare? What about that Buddy theme I mentioned? It is also a one time payment, but a lot less expensive. Either way, I'm going to have to get which ever one I use modified. Is there a reason why I should go with a social networking software instead of the wordpress Buddy theme?
