How much do people charge to clear viruses from WP websites?

Hi Gang

I'm losing the battle with my sites. In a previous post, http://www.warriorforum.com/website-...ole-daily.html I outlined all the things I have done to combat this issue, but even with running various clean up plugins, changing passwords, usernames, databases, updating themes, plugins and so on, it doesn't seem to be helping.

It all started with OptimisePress, and now that I have updated the theme to the latest version, it still has problems, probably because the virus lays dormant on the server somewhere.

So, now I think I need professional help, and I'm wondering if anybody has used anybody before for this type of thing, and how much it costs? I have about 15 sites.

Cheers
Phil

It is usually around $100-$150 depending on who you can find to handle the job. I worked at a major hosting company in the security department cleaning these things out for customers. There are many tricks these guys use. They almost always leave behind a backdoor to get back in as well. So once you think you have it clean here they come again. Sometimes they inject malicious code into the database as well.

Some key things to look for:

    1. Open various files and look for a base64 encoded string at the top of all files.
    2. Working from the command line is the easiest way to clean this stuff. Using grep and other tools like that.
    3. If you use content management systems like Word Press then you can delete everything but the wp-content folder and reinstall it. From there it would be best to load your theme from your original copy you have saved and reload the plugins from scratch also. You have to be sure to delete everything though and start from scratch or known clean backups. If so then you will most likely beat the problem.

There are tools as well that you can use like Linux Malware Detect. These are services I provide for free to my managed hosting clients. Either way let me know if you are seriously in a bind and can't find any help.

    Thanks,

    WBG

  • Have you ever used Securi - Sucuri Security. I use it to scan my sites and it has amazing reviews from the community. It's not 'cheap' but it seems to do the trick of getting malware/viruses off your website all while scanning your site daily.

Thanks, I had a quick look at this. So this is a service where they do the scanning and protection on an ongoing basis for you, is that how it works? I've tried doing it myself with the various free plugins but it's not really happening.

Yes, it is a subscription based service. More than most hosting plans. Seems expensive for peace of mind, but not my money either. I know that places like Hostgator will clean your site for free. I know people who will transfer their sites to Hostgator to get them to clean them up and then just cancel their account.

Funny enough, it's Hostgator I am with. They did a clean up for me, but very shortly afterwards, it all came back again. Even a basic plugin I ran discovered files they hadn't found. :-(

You just have to keep trying with them. Keep turning in tickets and don't give up. There are some great people there but there are also some people who are still learning. Just like anywhere. Ask to be escalated to level 2 or level 3 if you have no luck. They will take longer to get to you but they will get to you and clean it right. I know someone there that is the most amazing person I have ever met when it comes to cleaning malware out of websites. You just have to get lucky and find him. There are three shifts there too. The best of the best work nights. Or the swing shift from 3pm to midnight or so as well.

If you keep getting reinfected and claim it then the less experienced guys will just leave it for the upper level techs. Gotta play the system to make it work for you.

Ok mate, sounds good advice. I'll submit a ticket to them tonight.

      All the best
