Help needed: Designing a Creative Website

Hey everyone,
I have (classroom) experience in Dreamweaver and HTML and I want to build a website to aid in my job search. Like an online portfolio. I know exactly what I want, I am currently working on the graphics in Photoshop for my home page. However, I am not sure what program to start building it.
I noticed that a lot of websites are being built using templates and with Wordpress. My question is, if I use one of those templates or Wordpress, would I be able to upload my own photos to use on the pages and be able to highlight image maps and use my own creativity?
If not, what software do you guys recommend?
This is a site similar to what I have designed in the way the website reacts.
foxie's graphic design
I have emailed him to see what program he used, but he did not respond.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, sorry for such an inexperienced question.
Renee

      Hello Renee,
first of all best luck with your project!
You can use either wordpress or also Joomla, both has many free template that can suits your needs. Both are based on php frameworks, both stable and secure.
I advice you to study a little of CSS that are very useful for your purpose, maybe is not simple for the first time but you will see a big difference, especially regards graphics layout. You will find online many tutorial on how to personalize with CSS a template.
If you need any further help, just ask or send me a message, I will be very happy to help you.

If you know html and css you know light CMS, and you don't need to use Joomla or Wordpress for a website having only 3 or 4 pages. You can convert your existing Photoshop psd template to html.

He is not using any program (btw, they are referred to as applications) just some badly marked up HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Take a look at the source code of the website - he is using HTML tables for his layout! That method went out with the ark.

As previously suggested - learn HTML, CSS and possibly a bit of jQuery. Too many people throw up a Wordpress installation and install a crapload of plugins - often this is overkill for the needs that they require.

It may take a bit more time, but learning the basics will be a lot more rewarding in the long term, plus you will gain some valuable skills.

I learnt web development and design from Geocities. Today, you can do the same with Wordpress.com. Once you learn the basics of Wordpress.com, try the open source version at Wordpress.org and go from there.

You are looking for website where you can show your portfolio to others. I would like to suggest very simple way, just download ready made wordpress theme from themeforest and upload it on your web hosting and customize it according to your requirements, where you can easily upload the portfolio.

    Hi Renee

A lot of people are using WordPress for all kinds of sites these days. There are countless number of both free and paid theme that you can use to set up your own website. You can further tweak the themes with a little knowledge of HTML and CSS. Apart from that, there are a number of plugins that can add to the functionality of WordPress greatly.

Any website that's more than just a few basic plain pages with forms, pop-ups, sliders etc would require you to have an in-depth knowledge of HTML,CSS, PHP and perhaps Javascript etc. so you had better find a premium paid or free WordPress theme which will serve your requirements comparatively easily.

    Thanks

Just curious as to why you are not building your website using Dreamweaver as you stated that you have training in that area? Don't get me wrong, wordpress is a good platform to build websites but so is Dreamweaver if you like to develop and create everything yourself. Sounds like you're a quick learner based on the books you've just read through so what ever your choice, I believe you'll do fine. Good Luck
