Sample website graphics lettering

Hi,

How does one work with a header or footer graphic that they emblazoned "Your Website Goes here" in the graphic itself? How are you supposed to work with that? Can that actually be altered? Aren't the layers merged permanently?

    Well It can be modified.

    They use CSS and for the header they add a background image or some kind of background.


    And then inside that div ( the one with the header ) . You can add text on top of the image. and you can style that text anyhow again using CSS.

    It depends on the format of the graphic - if it is a .jpg (layers merged) then you can't do much with it - however most of them should come in a "layered" format (.psd or .pdn or whatever) and then, using PaintShop or Gimp or Paint.net - you can simply remove the layer which says "Your Website Here" and add a new layer with your own version "My Website Here".

    • Thanks for answering. The header graphic banner is a GIF and the footer is a JPG. Why do people upload these so called "templates" that you are supposed to be able to use if the graphics are useless? Frustrating. I just need to get started with this stuff and make some moolah then I can hire someone to do better stuff. I guess my first few will have so so (or no) graphics.

    Tom, it would seem crazy to give out templates without some way of editing to suit your needs - so the .psd file may be the one you need.

    I use paint.net to edit .psd's and it is a long time since I used Gimp, but I think Gimp used to do something to the layers. Honestly can't remember exactly what though - and it's maybe OK now. Someone else may confirm.

    • I just downloaded Paint.net and PSD is not in the file types that it can open. I guess you must edit them by some other technique with that program? I'll see if I can figure it out.

      Nice program though. Never heard of that one. ;-)

      EDIT: I found the plugin.
  • Well, I was able to figure out how to edit the PSD file and uncheck the layers I didn't want a add the layers that I do want and save it. The PSD has both the header and footer in it. The sample web page that comes with it calls on the JPG and GIF files, not the PSD. I have no idea how to get the header and footer in the altered PSD to chow up in the template instead of the JPG and GIF with the other name. I'm getting there though. If you know how to do it I'd appreciate it. I got this far.

    Hi Tom

    Sorry had to go earlier on and missed this one . . .

    If you open up the .psd with the header and footer in it - then take out all references to the footer (you will be left with just header references) - then use SAVE AS to save this file (as a .psd) with ANOTHER NAME e.g. header_new.psd.

    Then open the original file up again and take out the header references (to leave just the footer stuff) - again save as something else e.g. footer_new.psd.

    Now you have two files to work on - header_new.psd and footer_new.psd.

    When you have managed to add layers etc and get each file to where you want them to be - simply SAVE AS header.jpg and footer.jpg (when saving you will be asked if you want to "flatten" the image - say yes).

    The resulting .jpg files can then be used on your template/theme.

    You can get your graphics customized nicely for a fair price at redhotcovers.com. I know their work and it is the easiest way to go if you need a really clean look.
