What are the skills and qualities to build a successful web developer career? I mean I know where to start, by learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript... but how to master it?

  • To become a good web developer is to constantly learn to improve the languages you currently know and expand beyond what you already know and learn new languages often. The second you stop attempting to learn and expand, the second you have been downgraded. Its almost like a competition, the more you know, the stronger your skills are.

  • I agree with April above. The way to get good is to build a lot of websites. There is no substitute for experience.

I'd suggest you start out building websites for free for friends and family. That will give you experience and something for your portfolio. Maybe build 6 to 10 sites before offering yours services as a professional.

Be sure to ask for honest (not "kind") critiques from them. Then keep improving each to gain more experience and ask for more critiques. Getting online critiques from professionals is great too.

Always study what others are building and copy the best ideas (never copy actual content), just ideas and methods.

  • If you start without much knowledge or any experience you require most of all one skill: Patience! Lots!

  • Thanks for the feedback guys. Patience.. I have to remember that one! and practice like "thatjc" said, thanks again.
  • Many moons ago I started creating sites for free for family then friends then community orgs like churches etc. The more you design the better you will be. Start with one design language learn it then move on to the next. The free sites you create you can put them in a portfolio on your site. Just dont take on jobs that are way over your head start with simple sites then grow. Good luck!

    • Becoming a web developer is not easy but can be done.

I started doing it a few years ago and here's what i've learnt:

      1) Learn a platform like Wordpress - it will enable you to deliver high quality websites without learning too much code.

      2) Use tools available to your - you don't need to make everything from scratch. Use sites like themeforest and graphicriver.

      3) Sell hosting - get a reseller account and manage the hosting yourself. It's a great way to earn revenue and you have control

      4) Go networking - it's a great way to get known in the business community.

I talk about a few more ideas in this video I recorded recently -

      Hope it helps.

  • You master your skills by practice. No education will replace experience. When you master HTML/CSS/JS go on for some backend language and maybe start learning some front-end frameworks like Backbone, React or Angular
