Best Way To Back Up And Restore A Wordpress Site

I recently had trouble with Go Daddy hosting, (don't ask), and had to switch the two sites I had there to my Host Gator hosting.

I didn't realize that I needed more than just the Wordpress export file to move the sites, or I did, but didn't realize just how much I would lose when I moved without backing them up properly.

I lost the photos, the theme, the plugins, it basically destroyed them. So I've been looking into how to make sure this never happens again.

I've investigated backing up my sites via my Hostgator dashboard, and also using plugins like Updraft Plus.

I'm not sure which way is best and easiest to back up all the files, so I can easily restore it to a save point or move it to another host if something goes wrong.

Help please?

    I use FileZilla. I develop my sites on my computer and then I transfer them on my hosting space as directories. Each site has a directory and the most recent versions are always on my computer. I do not back up sites from my hosting space. It is the other way around.

    I use this plugin it works just fine.

    Always download the backup copy to your local computer, unzip it and make sure the wp_content folder is not corrupted in the backup. This is where all your pictures should be stored.

    Additionally check that the database has downloaded correctly too.

      +1 I've used this on smaller migration jobs many times and it holds up extremely well. Very simple too, gets everything done in just a few clicks.

    I use and recommend Xcloner it is free, and the plugin author responds promptly to support requests.

    Merely grab the data as it sits on your current host and export the database associated with the WordPress installation.

    Installing it on another host should be simple - if you're planning on using the same domain. Merely upload the data to the new host, import the database and connect the two via wp-config.php. Point your domain to your new host and wait for it to propagate. (might have to reset the permalinks) If not it's get's a little technical but honestly isn't that difficult.

    if domain name changes-
    Upload the data to your new host, import the database, navigate through the database and change the rows inside the wp_options table - siteurl and home (which is normally on page two of the wp_options table).

    then run a few sql commands:
    UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = REPLACE ( post_content, 'OLD_URL','NEW_URL');
    UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = REPLACE ( guid, 'OLD_URL','NEW_URL');

    connect the database in wp-config and login to your panel, make sure to visit permalinks in your settings tab to reset the permalinks and you should be good to go.

    No plugin is needed at all

      I use Duplicator Plugin. There are many other plugins for backup and restore, but this is the winner for me.

        Another vote here for Duplicator. We use it to backup live sites and move them around as well. Find it really useful for deploying sites from our development environments to live too.

    I use WP Clone by WP Academy also.
    Easy way to copy from 1 site (usually a client demo site) to a blank wordpress / old wordpress site (on their new / existing domain).

    I do also recommend BackupBuddy. if you are to spend some money, this might be the best choice to make quick backups.

    i suggest don't rely too much on plugin, learn on your own
    to backup your site manually just download this:
    --> wp-config.php
    --> zip the wp-content folder
    --> export the db in phpmyadmin
    but if dont want learn this or have no time then just use BackupBuddy plugin...
