Wordpress Question

I am newbie, and ready to start first site. I am going to use Wordpress, but I would like to know if once i start it free before hosting on my own, and start getting some traffic can everything that I have done on there be transferred to my own host. Also, if yes can you apply a wordpress theme on their site or is that only once your hosting it yourself.

  • If you just want to give a blog a try, WordPress.com is okay. If you want a presence on the internet that screams you and you have something to say in your blog, a stand-a-lone WPBlog from WordPress.org is for you. Good luck. Welcome to blogging.
  • You can move the content from the free WordPress.com blog to your own self-hosted blog BUT the links will not be the same. So really any work you did to get traffic and backlinks will be mostly wasted.

    Some themes can be used on both so if you choose a theme on the free side it should also be available for use on your own self-hosted site. But that is not the case the other way... what is available for a self-hosted WP blog might not be approved and available on the free WordPress.com blog.

    There are limits on advertising on the free WordPress.com blogs like no AdSense and other things like that.

    Something to think about... how often do you see a free WordPress or Blogger blog on the top of any of your Google searches??? So you may blog your butt off and provide great content but the traffic? I suggest messing with a free blog just to see if you get it, like it and will keep it up. If so get serious with a domain and hosting very quickly not to waste your efforts and good content on the free site.
  • I would rather invest like $20 bucks now ($10 for domain and $10 for hosting) instead of making problems later.
    Yes, you can transfer the data (articles and comments) on your new blog BUT you will lose all the link juice and stuff. It isn't worth it.
  • Yes i agree to houdy that you can surely transfer the blog but your links will be change so that's the negative part of transferring your blog. Why not you start a blog on wordpress and just continue with it and if you earn something then start another one buying a domain and hosting for yourself so that you can continue with both the blogs and have better earnings.

  • Thank you all that replied for setting me straight and I agree, for a $20 investment in domain and hosting there no reason why not just to do it right from the beginning and save the complictations later. The whole pupose is to monetize, so I'll go for it.

    • I agree with moving the blog, but you'll do yourself better by leaving what you have there, there and create links to your new site per page.

      BUT - the information pages on your original blog have been indexed by google, so even if you move the site and the works, you're new site will be 'duplicate content' in google's eyes.

      Consider performing 301 permanent redirects on your old site to your new site to avoid issues.

  • Why not use the Wordpress free hosting but register your own domain name? Then, as and when you want to go out on your own server, you can just redirect that domain name - now all your backlinks, etc will be the same, so presumably you won't lose any traffic / pagerank / etc
