Hey guys,

You guys always have awesome advice and help in this forum.
Thank you in advanced.

Recently got a new web design gig. Ready to start making the website. Move to my hosting, etc.

The problem I just ran into is that the website is owned by their old web developer. We can't get a hold of him. I called his number on his website, nothing disconnected. Emailed him and no responses. Looks like earlier this year someone renewed the domain.

I even checked the web developer's whois and emailed and called the numbers on his record. And no luck.

Please help, do you guys have any ideas?

Talk the client into a new domain name?

Thank you very much you guys

I would start by discussing it with the client. Explain the situation and suggest a new domain unless the client has the means to raise the developer from hibernation.

If the registered owner of the domain doesn't respond, there is no way you can get control short of a lawsuit.

If the phone number hasn't been disconnected, it could belong to someone else that doesn't answer their phone.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

This is a problem I have found a number of times before. A business should own and register their own domains rather than being piggy-backed onto someone else's hosting - although when you say "move to my hosting" it sounds like you might be doing the same thing?

Does your client have a contract with the previous web developer? If they do it should be easy enough to process the release. If not it might need lawyers!

That definitely seems like a tough situation. I don't know how else you'd do it without getting it on a different domain if the other party is being unresponsive.

Definitely try to explain the situation to your client and how there's really very little that you(or anyone else) can do at this point.

I would talk to the client inform them of the problem and best to get new domain name. Never ever let someone register a domain for you unless they give you login details. Then change login asap and make sure it is registered in your own name.

Discuss with the client and push ahead with a new domain/hosting setup if necessary.
