Using two wordpress themes for one site

My buddy told me I could use 2 wordpress themes for one site by installing a second copy of wordpress (Eg 1st copy is www.mysite.com and the second is www.mysite.com/articles).

However, Hostgator guy said that this would cause issues with permalinks and hardlinks.

He said: "redirecting from one to the other would be hard as the rewrite rules in the .htaccess will read hardlinks as permalinks and give 404, since the perm link structure of the hardlinks are not actual permalinks."

Is anyone able to advise what he's on about? What would be an example of this? Is there a work around?

I have done it as you have explained in the past. When you are linking from one to the other simply use the whole URL.

The actual trick is remembering the 2nd site should not have a "Home" page. As an example I had a blog site that was not compatible with WooCommerce So my blog site remained the same and the shopping went over to another theme. It was actually pretty easy keeping the 2 separate.

The workaround was explained well by the other 2 warriors but why do you want 2 WP installations? Why not using the WP multisite?

I also agree with this, makes more sense to install a multisite.

      All the best.

The Hostgator guy is an idiot. Figures.

You can do what you want.

Multisite is a PITA, and that's not at all what it was created for. To have just two "sites" on a single domain, one foldered, one not, that would be a waste of time and a nuisance.
