I've built all of my sites myself. It was hard in the beginning, but once I've got the hang of it, its just natural and easy. I just have to have total control of my business.

Don't forget about websites like weebly and strikingly. For simple websites they can look amazing and you can do it all by yourself in a few hrs.

You cannot be serious with this question. The price of a site depends on a lot of factors like functionality, features and mastery of work.
I built my own site, and yet I am uncertain about its price.

My boss has an auction site. He went to oDesk and got his site built on the cheap, but then he didn't realize the site did not include WordPress, so he had to spend more to get that integrated.

If you are an eCommerce business you can buy a good solid template and build it on your own. You do need to know a little html. I know enough to get buy and work on codes on my own for my own websites.

Your niche dictates the simplicity or complexity of web design.

It is depend on what kind of site you are trying to build. For my site I personally built it so I did not spend any penny from my pocket.

I've never paid for any website - although I've occasionally purchased graphic services... banners, logos, that sort of thing.

My first site took about 6 months, and was actually manually coded in painfully learned HTML on notepad. That was back in 2001. That site later moved to Drupal, and when I get the time, will be moved over to Wordpress.

Nowadays - it's Wordpress from the beginning - and it takes very little time to put up a website - I'd be foolish to pay someone else to do it.

I see on Fiverr people offering to install Wordpress for $5. Select the right theme - and 90% of your work is done!

Now, if you're building a more complex ecommerce site, or a community site - then perhaps you're getting into an area where you should seek professional help. But for a basic website - even an absolute beginner can watch Youtube videos and follow along!
