Does anyone use frontpage to create websites? I have a friend who doesn't know much html and he wants to try to do a few sites using Frontpage. I have it on my system but I don't really know how it is used and how complex it is? Is there a support site? Everytime I Google it I get goofy things like front-page, but not anything regarding the software for making websites.

Frontpage is good for beginners. I use it mainly for quick 'hacks' (template designs), and then usually re-code it for my own needs. Look for 'frontpage tutorial' if you want an actual tutorial.

Awesome. I was afraid it might be for people who were a bit more advanced. I think one of my issues is I was searching " Front Page Tuturial" and I wasn't getting the right info. All one word, Got it! Thanks so much!

At first glance it is far too complex for beginners with no html or DTP experience. However, there is a book FrontPage 2003, The Missing Manual available at most libraries, or it can be ordered. This will get him or her going. From there on it is a matter of gaining experience. ANYTHING is easy once you understand it.
I use FrontPage all the time because it keeps my folders and pages updated without me even having to look. I can rename a page and all 5,000 other pages on the web site will update. The same thing happens if I move it into another folder. It can also update any scripts on any of the pages at the touch of a key.
The one bad thing about using FrontPage is that any webmaster that writes his own html and other codes will shoot it to pieces because it doesn't meet their criteria. If you can't stand criticism from professionals, start out with some other product. DreamWeaver doesn't seem to have nearly so much bad press.
What I am personally switching to for small web sites (less than 500 pages) is: WebPage X2 from Serif.com The price is much lower and the quality is much higher.

I've used FrontPage for all of my sites since 1998. I upgraded every time an upgrade came out. I've never had any problems with it.

It not called FrontPage anymore. They've changed the name to Expression Web 2. If works just like FP but it's FP on steriods.

Now it handles html, php, asp, ajax and just about everything. I have upgraded and use that now.

You can find it here Amazon.com: Microsoft Expression Web 2 Upgrade:...Amazon.com: Microsoft Expression Web 2 Upgrade:...
If you search Amazon you can probably find a book for whatever version you're using.

I thought FrontPage had disappeared however I see they just changed its name. I can't believe some people are still using that. I might try it myself again, now that there are so many updates to it.

Frontpage is good for simple sites specially with a TABLE structure. Beginners can use it for Minisite and Websites.

For the more advanced users DreamWeaver is the better choice. It handles Tables, DIVs seemlessly. It also generates CSS much better. Also facilitates better other scripting languages, Flash and other activeX.

Theres a book called Microsoft Office Professional which was a good read when I began learning FPage ... but that was a long time back. Not sure if its still there.

When I first started to do web design I used Front Page, I haven't upgraded to Expressions but would like to. I got out of doing web pages and only currently maintain a few for long time customers. I found it much easier to learn then Dreamweaver at the time.

FrontPage is a discontinued program and has been since December 2006 when Expression Web was released. FrontPage is no longer available for purchase at retail unless someone has some very old stock. The good news is that Expression Web is actually cheaper if you own any MS Office application, almost any Adobe or Corel app which qualifies you for upgrade pricing ($99 retail, less at a discounters.)

For true beginners Expression Web IS easier to learn how to use than Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is more powerful in many ways but has a steeper learning curve.

I recommend the "Basic Website Tutorial" over at by-expression.com in the tutorial section, it is free but does require registration to download the asset zip file to work along with it or to download the video to work along with it offline (registration required and if you want to download it right click on the download link in IE and use "save target as" or it will open in Windows Media Player).

I still prefer Dreamweaver. It is much easier to build templates using this than Frontpage. If he's a newbie in using Dreamweaver, there are lots of tutorial sites where he can learn some very useful tips.

  • I used to use Frontpage but switched to Dreamweaver CS4. I think FP is a better option for beginners however it has some major drawbacks. I would recommend starting with DW and following along with some online tutorials.

Frontpage caused me a lot of headaches so I wish I would have started using DW from the start.

I use FP just a bit updating a really large site for a non profit organization, and don't like it, but it does get the job done.

Also note that my host, and probably a lot more, do not support front page extensions any more, so that would be one more thing you would need to check before getting hosting.

Personally I prefer Notepad++ but if I did go with a wysiwyg I'd first try Expression web. I read a lot of forums and it really does get a lot of positive comments. It has a new graphic design section that also sounds impressive to me. In fact I have thought of trying it out just for that part.

If you already have FP or any MS office product you get it for just the upgrade price, less than $100. (I saw $79 a few weeks ago but maybe that has gone up since someone mentioned $99.)

    best wishes, lloyd
