Credit Card or Paypal?

Hey Everyone, not sure if this was asked before.

What is the best practice for emcommerce sites in terms of payments?

Should a site accept both credit cards and paypal?

I think paypal alone is enough, because if you don't have a paypal account, you can still pay with credit card through the paypal site, with out a account.

So is'nt that allot safer then accepting credit cards directly off the site?

But i heard that there are some people who avoid paypal completely.

What do you think?

Everyone can integrate PayPal on their site, but not everyone can accept credit card payments since you need bank approval, SSL cert, etc.

The more options you provide to the buyers, the better. The rest is up to you.

if you are serious about your business, you have to accept credit card. my experience is accepting credit card instantly increased my sales by 100% (ie, doubled). see Should you Accept Credit Card for Your e-Commerce Site? | e-Commerce 101 where i posted a snapshot comparison of my zen cart admin panel. it also gives you more freedom on items to sell. both paypal and google checkout have restrictions. an advantage of paypal is international sales. regardless, obviously the more options the better.

True, but do the average consumer know this?

At least for me, i don't really consider a business more "legitimate" just because they accept credit cards, when i shop online.

In fact i don't like to give my CD details to sites i don't trust. I prefer to use paypal to be my middle man.

You need to research your target audience for the product(s) you sell to determine their buying habits and preferences. Paypal is popular and you don't have to worry about PCI-DSS compliance or audits. The overhead cost is definitely reduced when choosing PayPal.

Some PayPal stats for you: 2.6 million top customers, 98 average purchases per year, $4,214.00 spent on average per year based on 110 million active PayPal accounts in 2011.

It will depend on your needs and your potential customer needs as to whether you choose to use a payment gateway or payment processor for your ecommerce project.

Paypal and Credit cards have a similar type of features.
But, for the business point of view credit cards are the best option.

Paypal certainly has a lot going for it (easy start up, no monthly fee commitments). One issue I've seen with Paypal is that consumers somethings think they need a Paypal account in order to pay with Paypal. Also, depending on how you choose to integrate with Paypal, I've seen lower checkout "success rates" with Paypal in some cases. On the whole, I agree with those who say it makes sense to offer multiple options (Paypal, credit card, etc.).

The more payment options you could provide to the consumer, the better.

I think using both is better.
I am saying this because Paypal doesn't provides its services in all countries including those who use internet most. Giving them the credit card option is best while where Paypal provides services, residents of those people enjoy benefit of both

Many countries like India uses debit card for payment. In India it is very difficult to get physical credit cards. But paypal doesnot accept government debit cards.
Secondly paypal doesnot accept virtual credit cards.
Customers are using more virtual cards as it is fraud proof and prepaid.
So in my opinion credit card option will double your sales. So use services like Stripe .com
