Wordpress Help Needed

I'm a noob here but have a question. My friend says this isn't possible but I hope it is.

I want to know if I can create a "global themes directory" that I could choose from when setting up new blogs. This would prevent me from having to load the theme to each separate blog. I'm using Filezilla as my FTP if that matters. Seems like there should be a way to do this.

Thanks so much,
Neal

  • Sorry Neal but I can't help you out. Though I would think you would have to upload each one.
  • Thanks fan994; anyone else know for sure if this is possible or not?

    • it would be more work than to load it each time.
  • I dont think wordpress can work like that, you best bet is to get help for wordpressdotorg forums
  • Try the blogtechguy.com (sorry I can't post links yet) since he deals with WP exclusively he may have an answer for you.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Its only 2-3 extra clicks to upload a theme and you would still have to choose one in the WP admin panel, so maybe I am confused as to exactly what you are trying to do.

You could create a wp-content folder on your desktop with all the themes you might need and all the plugings that you use. Then you can just upload that 1 folder to your new WP site and everything you would need would be there. That is usually the easiest way.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Some good points were brought up and why this may not be a good idea so I think I'll just keep my favorite themes in a folder on my desktop and upload when I need them.

    Thanks,
    Neal
  • One thought on this - though I do agree with keeping your themes separate so you don't lose all your blogs. If you have your own server, you could just create symlinks to a central themes directory - then each wordpress installation would see the same themes files.
  • You could change the default template that is loaded with Wordpress if you wanted to. I could digg out the code that does this for you if that would help you.
