HTML/CSS website URL & display width problem?

Can anyone help me pls? Website width set to 900px in CSS stylesheet (2 col = 720px+180px).

The width & fonts display correctly in this URL:
http://ewhiz.biz/


but a lot wider adding www to the URL:
http://www.ewhiz.biz/index.html


why? I use Firefox.

    I went to your site(s) using Firefox and both sites look exactly the same to me. I could not see anything different about them. The default page load is domainName/index.html.... The only thing I can think of is that maybe you need to clear your cache so that if you have been working on the site and made some changes to it you are not seeing the latest version as you have it in your cache.

    Try that and see what happens.....

  • And they look the same to me too....... so clearing your cache as suggested by Richard may work. How to do this?

    Well donload ccleaner - google it, it's free and it works. It clears your cache completely. All your history is gone so you can see your site in real time from the cleanup, rather than from the cached files on your computers history.

    Incidentally most sites are still best viewed at 780 for most internet users/viewers

    Just because you've got a 24" screen doesn't mean everyone else has.

  • same here. about that 780 range that number is down to 4% last year was 8%. if that trend holds it will be 2% next year and 1% or 0% after that. eventually those lagging need to get glasses and just increase the resolution or get a bigger monitor.

    • 900px is a not a one of the normal screen resolution, though it is a fairly common browser instance width for people with high resolution monitors. I suspect the origianl poster meant 800px (for which 760 is safer to prevent a horizontal scrollbar than 780px) since most people tend to think in terms of screen resoltuion.

      Remember that screen resolution doesn't correlate very well to browse size. I'm typing this with my laptop connected to a 1920x1050 screen resolution. Open on this screen is Outlook, Dreamweaver, Expression Web, IE 8, Firefox, iTunes, messenger, SnagIt and OneNote. Not a single one of those is open full size.

      Even those that do browe full with may not have their full screen resolution available because they have a sidebar (such as favorites) open. Then you also have to account for people who use larger fonts or have their browsers set to zoom automatically since people on lcd screens can't change their screen resolution from the device default or the sharpness of the text will suffer. That is why I tend to stick to the narrower screen size or use a fluid layout.

  • Thanks guys but no luck. I've cleared my Cache, Firefox 3. Click Thumbnail. It's a Screen Capture to demonstrate the difference in side margins between the 2 URL's of the same site.




    I'll try the ccleaner, then try shrink from 900 to 780px.

    • Guys, I got my problem solved. You won't believe it, it was the Firefox Browser ZOOM, it "remembers" a certain zoom strength for www sites as opposed to http sites. I feel so stupid. Thanks for help!
